Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

We watched "Plastic Ocean" tonight. One of my takeaways was the fact that Americans (and likely Canadians) produce about 300 lbs of plastic waste every year. While the documentary looked to "circular" recycling as a solution, that should only be for existing plastics. The plastics/fossil fuel industry would love it if we continued to purchase plastics. Would be so much better for our planet and wellbeing if we banned them outright and looked for truly sustainable alternatives.

    Food Make My Own
How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

Made homemade granola bars today. They are by far tastier than any chemically engineered bar wrapped in plastic, cheaper, and more nutritious. Feels good to not have to rely on packaged times.

Going well.  Had a picnic today - all reusable items.  Working hard to be sustainable or recycle.
  • Reflection Question
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I am finding having a daily meal without plastics is so hard to do...need to look for food in carboard box or glass jars.

Making yoghurt today. Bill almost used up the last bit that I needed. Caught him just in time!
Also garlic oil to have on hand. This from garlic I found about 30 years ago in the ruins of a town on Parry Island near our first cottage!

Hanging out clothes after the wash - loving it.  Also growing our own lettuce, tomatoes and beets.

    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

Probably the store where we purchase it. Neat and tidy. Less handling.

Working hard to be mindful of the environment.  Hanging wash out on maiden.  Liking the result.  The sun dries very quickly and no need to iron!
