Amber's actions
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.
Bathroom
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Bathroom
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Borrowed Books
The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.
Kitchen
Is it trash...or a trash bag?
The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.
Bedroom
Multiple Wears Before Washing
The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.
Study
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Switch to Loose Leaf TeaTake time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!
Amber Acord 7/04/2024 4:45 AMI love starting my day with a nice cup of loose leaf tea, I have about 20 different types of loose leaf tea at my desk and I use compostable bags, the tea balls always drop tea in the water so I switched to compostable bags-
Amber Acord 7/05/2024 5:32 AMI agree on organic and fair trade, it tastes so much better! There are some places around where you can get organic tea but it's not nearly as available as I'd like it to be -
Lisa Brenskelle 7/04/2024 7:17 AMAnd, often the quality/taste is better. As an avid tea drinker, I definitely prefer loose leaf. I try to aim for organic and fair trade as well, but this is not always readily available.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Multiple Wears Before WashingIn addition to helping clothes last longer, washing clothes less frequently also saves water by running the washing machine less often. As the climate and water situations change, what are some other ways both your household and our community could become more resilient?
Amber Acord 7/04/2024 4:44 AMUsing a dishpan to wash the dishes instead of letting the water run the entire time, and letting the dishes sit until the end of the day so you only wash once-
Jennifer Klotz 7/04/2024 5:27 AMSo glad you mentioned the running water-dish wash method. This has become more popular and it drives me crazy! Essentially any time water is left running while we do something (brush teeth, wash hands, wash dishes), it's a waste. Let's hope the trend disappears!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Go For a WalkWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Amber Acord 7/02/2024 6:39 AMI walk my dog daily, and often we will go to a trail to spend time in nature. We are fortunate to be close to so many great metro parks, it's easy to forget the city when your surrounded by green life. It helps me relax and handle my anxiety better -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Amber Acord 7/01/2024 10:45 AMI love to see my plants grow, I have herbs that last me through the year that I grow during the grow season, and it's nice to pick fresh from the garden to cook same day -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Brush with BambooWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Amber Acord 7/01/2024 10:40 AMBamboo brushes are less impactful when it's time to replace them, they won't sit in a landfill. They are not very expensive. I pretty much have peer pressured my friends to use bamboo brushes -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Bidet All DayThere are many benefits to using a bidet, including health, environmental, and economic benefits. Which of these benefits was most influential for you in making the switch to a bidet, and what has your experience been like since?
Amber Acord 7/01/2024 10:35 AMThe biggest influence I had to install a bidet was health, and reduce use of TP.-
Amber Acord 7/02/2024 7:19 AMRight? It makes such a difference, they are in public areas in Japan, we should put them in public areas here if only in the accessible stalls for people who have mobility issues -
Shelley Orloski 7/02/2024 7:11 AMI LOVE ours and am sad if I need to "go" anywhere other than home.
