Kara's actions
Bathroom
See the Green
An estimated 50,000lbs (23,000kg) of contact lenses end up in sewage sludge in the US each year. This month, I will learn how to recycle used contact lenses and packaging or switch to wearing glasses instead.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 20 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 20 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Study
Investigate Oil Subsidies
Our tax dollars are subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, making the cost of plastics artificially low and encouraging further plastics production. I will spend 20 minutes learning about oil subsidies and how I can advocate for their elimination.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 20 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Family + Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 20 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Study
Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 10 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Kitchen
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Study
Print in Draft Mode
To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.
Bedroom
Multiple Wears Before Washing
The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Investigate Oil SubsidiesDid anything you learned surprise you about plastics, fossil fuels, and oil subsidies? If we eliminate oil subsidies, what are some externalities we, our communities, and our society may face as a result? What's one way you'll advocate for social justice alongside these necessary environmental protections?
Kara Ahmanson 7/31/2024 8:47 AMI was shocked that manufacturing plants for plastics are violating environmental laws (I shouldn't be surprised but I'm optimistic!). I hope regulation is only getting better so this stops but also, I try not to buy plastic as much as possible and I hope to get others to do the same as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Dig into BioplasticsWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Kara Ahmanson 7/26/2024 8:51 AMI'll be looking for certifications from now on! It's ridiculous that companies can just say something is biodegradable when it's not-
Jaden Brodie 7/26/2024 11:06 AM100% agree claims should mean something

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Plastic History BuffHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Kara Ahmanson 7/25/2024 11:27 AMIt's funny that we shifted from ivory to protect wildlife and now we use plastic that actively harms wildlife. We need to go back to valuing items that last and are reusable -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Dive Into Expiration DatesWere you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?
Kara Ahmanson 7/24/2024 10:03 AMI am usually the type of person that sticks to expiration dates but I recently downloaded an app called FoodKeeper and that helps me get over the expiration dates because it tells you when it is bad and how to keep it longer -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Balloons BlowHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Kara Ahmanson 7/22/2024 9:36 AMI have considered the environmental impact of balloons. Far too often are balloons released or accidentally float away. Fortunately I am at a stage in my life where balloons are not very common in my life. When I do throw parties I stick to paper banners or signs -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Research Local Waste SitesIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Kara Ahmanson 7/22/2024 9:30 AMSouth east of me is most affected and those neighborhoods are predominantly low income communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Tour A Waste Management FacilityLandfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?
Kara Ahmanson 7/22/2024 9:23 AMThose machines are absolutely amazing. The amount of trash they go through and so quickly! It's also shocking just how much trash there is -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join a Cleanup EffortWhat was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort?
Kara Ahmanson 7/22/2024 9:04 AMThere was so much scuba gear and foods like a giant piece of ginger. I get so mad at seeing so much styrofoam too. It's so hard to pick up all the little pieces but I'm glad I picked up what I could.-
Christine Kitch 7/22/2024 9:20 AMEvery little piece is one less accidental meal for sea life or shorebirds. Thanks for picking up after others. :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets All Natural Pet ToysIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Kara Ahmanson 7/19/2024 9:36 AMI use used paper products in egg cartons as an enrichment game for my dog. He loves to rip it up and then I'll recycle it after it's been fully used! It helps me feel better about getting more use from these products and it's a fun and different activity for my dog -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Give Some Green GratitudeThere are many pros and cons to social media use in today's society. How can you mindfully use social media as a tool for connection and sharing your values with your community?
Kara Ahmanson 7/19/2024 9:34 AMIt's always a good to post about nature and wildlife. I find that people appreciate it and it reminds them to stop and smell the flowers while thinking about the environment
