Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 16 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Brian Albaum 7/31/2024 10:10 AMLast day of the Ecochallenge! Well done to everyone who engaged with this important and impactful initiative - looking forward to seeing the final results and all the ongoing, lasting changes that come from it.
See you next year! -
Brian Albaum 7/30/2024 9:22 AMNot going to lie...just realized that you get 25 points for checking in here ON THE DAY - as opposed to retroactively like I have been. So smart, organizers of the Ecochallenge....makes me want to engage here even more! LOL...
It is the last few days of the Ecochallenge, and in reflecting on the month, I can confidently say this exercise was helpful in raising awareness within my own life and among my community of friends. It spurred discussions and fruitful conversations, which then led to impactful actions. It got me and my wife to be a little creative and think outside the box about how we could minimize our plastics and maximize our impacts.
While I focus on work like this for a living, this month was a healthy reminder that opportunities remain within my own world to make improvements. And I have a sneaking suspicion that the actions I took this month won't be ending when the Ecochallenge does.-
Plastic Free @ Columbus Zoo 7/30/2024 9:50 AMHehehehe 😁 Gotta get those bonus 25 points! In seriousness though, we're so glad that this challenge has had such a positive impact on your life! Hopefully we'll "see" you again next year!

Brian Albaum 7/29/2024 5:52 PMBeen a few weeks since my last update, and to be honest I have been repeating much of the actions that I have already posted about...
One highlight over the past few weeks was the opportunity to meet with Dr. Debi Luke, one of our Team Captains, to discuss the great ongoing collaboration between Florida Aquarium and SSA. Our partnership has advanced The Florida Aquarium's mission and enhanced guest experience - and with much still to do, initiatives like the Plastic Free Ecochallenge are an invaluable resource for raising awareness and furthering our collective sustainability goals.
Go team go! -
Brian Albaum 7/29/2024 5:45 PMFor me it was about raising my own awareness of my personal plastics footprint - I wanted to bring the topic even more into the front of my mind than it already was! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Brian Albaum 7/29/2024 5:41 PMI grew up being taught that the world was already broken, and that each one of us had the responsibility and obligation to take active steps to fix it. The idea of proactively helping, doing more than is expected, is always valued - and what is easier than picking up a piece of trash or two? Leaving it better than you found it? That goes beyond "sustainability", into "regeneration"... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Advocate For Better Food PackagingSingle use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?
Brian Albaum 7/29/2024 5:32 PMI had a discussion with a friend recently on this very topic - I introduced the issue, explained why it was a concern, then posed it to them as a challenge - could they collect all the plastic they used for a short while, just to see what their own footprint was...it spurred valuable dialogue, and they seemed to take it to heart. Most people want to do the right thing anyway! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Go For a WalkWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Brian Albaum 7/29/2024 5:27 PMMy Dad always encouraged going for walks...he called them "Tetris Walks", because they allowed him the headspace to think and ponder...after even short walks, he often felt like things kind of fell into place in his mind. I feel the same way...going for a walk helps clear my mind of some clutter and organize my thoughts in a more efficient and positive framework. Walks are a tonic - and for free! -
Brian Albaum 7/15/2024 5:53 AMIt feels good to be building my own awareness and momentum in this space...
July 11 - brought my folding travel spork in my pocket so was able to decline single-use cutlery at lunch
July 12 - brought my reusable shopping totes to the store so I did not need any plastic bags
July 13 - organizing a party in a few weeks, and communicated to the other organizers that we expect drinks to be only in aluminum cans, with no plastic bottles.
July 14 - made my own home cleaning solution! Soaked leftover orange peels in white vinegar for a few weeks, then strained it into a reusable spray bottle - effective and smells citrusy and fresh!
Keep up the great work everyone - nearly halfway through the month, and never too late to get more involved! -
Brian Albaum 7/10/2024 8:40 PMKeeping this journal of daily actions going....
July 5 - refused single-use plastic cutlery when I picked up food to-go
July 6 - brought my water bottle with me to lunch so I did not need a single-use cup for the meal
July 7 - brought my reusable tote bags to the grocery store to avoid needing any plastic bags
July 8 - coordinated an online purchase with my wife to reduce shipping materials and footprint
July 9 - used a beeswax wrap (instead of plastic wrap or a Ziploc bag) to package our leftovers after we were done eating dinner at home
July 10 - forgot my reusable grocery bags, but only bought a few things, so stuffed them into my pockets and married them out, as opposed to getting a plastic bag
We are one-third of the way through the month, and every little bit helps....how is your Ecochallenge going so far? -
Brian Albaum 7/04/2024 11:09 PMJuly 4 - hosted several friends for our annual 4th of July BBQ, and used washable cups to start, though when we ran out, we switched to Ball aluminum cups - these were recycled instead of directed to the landfill.
