Kitchen
Natural Corks
Natural cork is a sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable material, but many wineries are switching to synthetic corks for their wine bottles. Using a database like CORKWatch, I will choose wines with a natural cork closure, and properly compost or recycle them after enjoying my wine.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 4 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 4 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Family + Pets
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Better Gum
Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Fill a Water BottleInvestigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Lee Baldonado 7/31/2024 7:30 AMThe most powerful tool is education. We must continue to provide information and education to both local governments and consumers. People take action when an issue directly affects them or their loved ones. The lack of easy accessible information paired with corporate redirection make for a noisy learning environment that can confuse and frustrate those that are effected! So get out and spread the word! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use The DishwasherAlthough the dishwasher saves time and water, some people enjoy washing dishes by hand for the mindfulness practice it can provide. What are some other ways you can practice mindfulness in the kitchen?
Lee Baldonado 7/25/2024 7:18 AMTry cleaning the surfaces in your kitchen. This could be a substitute for handwashing dishes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Better GumWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Lee Baldonado 7/25/2024 7:17 AMI really don't chew gum. Gum has a tendance to give me headaches when I do chew it. However, if I did want to replace gum it may be with Mint leaves. This can help to stimulate your salivary glands and help with bad breath! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Save Jars for ReuseWhat's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?
Lee Baldonado 7/11/2024 1:10 PMWe provide them to a soup kitchen. The soup is bottled in our saved jars and handed out to those in need! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Go StrawlessHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Lee Baldonado 7/11/2024 1:09 PMThe aquarium has been working on plastic straws in the lowcountry areas any way, but you don't need straws. I find that I enjoy my beverage just the same! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Lee Baldonado 7/11/2024 1:08 PMIt isn't easy to convince folks to do a little extra. However if you can show them the amount of waste that created and appeal to their wallet based off of their purchasing of disposable items can go a long way. If they can start with small changes then it can go a long way! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use a Reusable MugDid you encounter any resistance from your local coffee shop when trying to use your own mug? How did you navigate it, and how can you advocate from this to be a more commonplace practice in your community?
Lee Baldonado 7/11/2024 1:06 PMI don't drink coffee, but I have used it as my soda fill and the store worked with me! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Natural CorksDo you have a favorite winery? Do they use natural or synthetic corks for their wines? If they use synthetic, how can you advocate for them to use natural corks instead?
Lee Baldonado 7/11/2024 1:05 PMThere is a major battle between the natural and synthetic cork markets and has been for the past few years. Synthetic corks are becoming harder and harder to spot and currently the market appears to be around 50% of the wines that you see. I would recommend Italian wines. Did you know that in order to be considered DOCG there are strict guidelines including not irrigating your crops. For the cork trade know that cork oaks are harvested not cut down to produce natural cork and play habitat to many different animals like the Iberian Eagle! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Lee Baldonado 7/11/2024 1:00 PMI've got my own little garden growing in the backyard and it is time to harvest my Carolina Reapers and Thai Chilies. Growing a garden can be a great sense of accomplishment and a way to freshen up either your house of your yard. Plus that are a great conversation starter at work!
