Kitchen

Go Strawless

Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 2 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

Dive Into Expiration Dates

Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 15 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.

Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal

I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.

Balloons Blow

Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

Fill a Water Bottle

Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Community

Go For a Walk

Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

Keep My Community Clean

In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 6 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.

Share My Actions

One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.

Bathroom

Sustainable Suds

In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

Estimate Your Ecological Footprint

I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

When I was a kid, I never thought about the impacts of balloons and releasing them. Now that I'm older, I know how detrimental they can be to the environment, especially animals. I just saw a story from a farmer whose calf ate a balloon and died as a result. Sadly, stories like that aren't uncommon. Birds, turtles, horses, plants, and more are all impacted by balloons. My favorite alternative to balloon releases that I've heard of is wildflower seed spreading for pollinators.

    Kitchen Dive Into Expiration Dates
Were you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?

My mom has worked in the food banking world since I was probably in middle or high school and I learned a lot about expiration dates from going to work with her and volunteering. I was surprised that they weren't able to take anything that was expired due to Feeding America guidelines. In reality, most foods are good well past the expiration dates because it's mostly just a suggestion by manufacturers that guarantees the highest quality of the product. It may not be as fresh past the listed point, but it is still able to be consumed. I did a little research to learn the difference between "sell-by", "best-by", and "use-by" dates. The sell-by date is the last date a store should have the food out for sale, best-by date is recommended for the highest quality/taste, and use-by date is the last suggested date for which a product is at it's highest. Knowing this has helped me save food from being wasted both by not buying more than I need and not throwing things away right at expiration. I also did a chemistry experiment over a whole semester on expiration dates on medications using a forced degradation method and it was awesome to see the results!

It can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?

If I know that I will be heading somewhere to shop, I use the carabiner on my car keys and hook them onto the handles of my reusable bags so I can't forget them. I also have a few stashed in my car in case of emergency.

Instead of being too hard on myself about using single use plastics occasionally, I've realized that some things are just hard to avoid and it's a bigger issue than just me. More needs to be done at a higher level to reduce plastics in everyday products. Being more aware of the single use plastics that I use has helped me make better choices and understand what I am buying and assess if it is really a necessary purchase. I've also been more conscious of making sure I recycle as much as I can whenever possible.

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

I switched to environmentally friendly bar shampoo & conditioner when I left for my study abroad in Little Cayman last month after learning they didn’t have a water treatment system on the island. I didn’t see a good reason to switch back when I got home so I am still using it to create less waste & keep harmful chemicals out of the environment. I also got reef safe sunscreen for my study abroad & I plan to switch to the permanently as well!
