Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Study

Greenwashing Pro

Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 30 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Travel Toiletries

Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.

COMPLETED

Kitchen

Use Reusable Utensils

Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

Dive Into Expiration Dates

Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 30 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.

Save Jars for Reuse

Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.

Use a Reusable Mug

Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 1 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

Fill a Water Bottle

Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.

Recycling Textiles

Every single textile ever made will, at some point, become worn out - and dealing with that waste costs millions of tax dollars every year. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the different types of textile recycling and creating a plan for what I'll do with my clothes and other textiles when they are too worn out to use anymore.

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

Give Veggie Scraps Another Life

Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.

Choose Reusable Food Storage

I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

Rethink Returns

While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 30 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.

Give Some Green Gratitude

Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.

Homemade or Refillable Cleaners

Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.

Except for fresh ingredients I need to restock, my plan for August is to use up all my dry food & freezer food before purchasing more. Wish me luck!

I missed the post featuring our pets, so I’ll do that today. This is Chance when he was 1 year old, lounging on his repurposed Thunder blanket that was left in lost & found. Chance wants to thank you for encouraging his Momma to make homemade broth this month, it was delish!

He's the most handsome land shark ever! Fergus also appreciated the chicken scraps from the broth we made from the whole chickens we bought this month.

Frozen veggies for fresher quality (in a plastic bag) or canned green beans in a plastic lined aluminum can? I have decision fatique at this point. LOL

As the end of the month approaches, I'm feeling encouraged by all the tips and tricks shared by other participants. Every year I learn new ways to live a life with less single use plastic and I appreciate the inspiration.

Not really a favorite but, I learned that paper cups are not created equal and the microplastics they release into hot liquids has me more convinced that ever that I don’t need (insert your favorite to go coffee here). 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

Hubs still thinks we need ziplock bags and bought a couple of boxes recently. As I was packing my lunch this morning, I (conveniently) grabbed one for my chips and thought twice about that. Instead, I chose a reusable silicone bag and will continue to work on my spouse to be more plastic-conscious. (I believe you CAN teach an old dog new tricks?) 😁

For the longest time I wouldn’t subscribe to my husband’s anxiety about plastic goods. I noticed that he wouldn’t eat any snacks in plastic (except popsicles 😝) nor would he use any of the cleaners, bathroom supplies, or kitchen supplies I bought that were plastic. Finally I decided well it’s silly to keep purchasing this stuff. And he had already created his own workarounds. So I could adjust faster. Hopefully your husband will watch and internalize like I did!

In relation to detergents, such as dishwasher and laundry, our family uses exclusively powder. No plastic jugs, no microplastics from the little pods...we need more detergents in powder form. I love my detergent, but I know other folks don't have the option to enjoy their favorite detergent (especially) in powder form.
