It's so close to the end! What actions are you excited to continue beyond the challenge?

  • Reflection Question
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

There is SO much plastic packaging for food items (sometimes packages within other plastic packages!). I would especially love to see some progress on the availability of unwrapped produce in grocery stores.

How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?

Creative thinking and innovation is something at which humans excel, so that makes me hopeful. Taking a wholistic approach to environmental issues is important so that we don't create solutions to one problem that end up exacerbating another issue.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Learn about Plastic Production
What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

"The amount of plastic manufactured in the first ten years of this century will approach the total produced in the entire last century." We're producing, using and throwing away more plastic than ever. The positive aspect of this statistic is that it clearly IS possible to live lives that involve significantly less plastic, because that's how people lived for a long time.
  • Reflection Question
Food Advocate For Better Food Packaging
Single use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?

This is a tough question. For most people I see that they only change their behavior related to plastics when they feel personally motivated and hopeful. Maybe I would talk to them about how good it makes me feel to avoid single-use plastic and share some of my most successful swaps.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Dig into Bioplastics
What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

Bioplastics are simply not a great solution in most cases. Unfortunately, I'm not surprised but remain hopeful future innovations in the kinds of materials used to make single-use products can happen.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Green Beauty
How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

Share information about the companies you find doing a great job with alternative packaging. Hopefully sharing stores of success it will inspire others to try new brands when they find out what's available.
