Lisa's actions
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Kitchen
Plastic-Free Produce Storage
Produce doesn't need to be stored in plastic bags to stay fresh! I will learn how to properly store my produce to extend its freshness without single-use plastic.
Bedroom
Recycling Textiles
Every single textile ever made will, at some point, become worn out - and dealing with that waste costs millions of tax dollars every year. I will spend 20 minutes learning about the different types of textile recycling and creating a plan for what I'll do with my clothes and other textiles when they are too worn out to use anymore.
Study
Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 20 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Lisa Brenskelle 7/10/2024 4:57 PMI posted an advocacy request last week, but didn't include the accompanying article on What You Need to Know About the Plastic Crisis. Here it is: https://www.nrdc.org/bio/avinash-kar/what-you-need-know-about-plastic-crisis-
Mary Hanks 7/14/2024 9:27 PMHi Lisa, I got your message about the solar co-op. I'm not the homeowner, so it's not my decision. However, the house has been assessed for its solar capacity, and the folks who seemed trustworthy regretfully deemed the structure not a very good prospect. There were several reasons for this, of which the most serious is probably that it's hemmed in by larger buildings and tree cover. However, I did get on a mailing list that should help me keep up with developments in the field. I've certainly experienced how quickly technology has progressed in other areas, so I remain hopeful. -
Mary Hanks 7/11/2024 1:31 PMLisa, this is Mary in Houston. How are you faring in the wake of the hurricane? I hope all is well with you. I'm somewhat reassured by the fact that you were able to post yesterday.

Lisa Brenskelle 7/04/2024 6:56 AMI selected the ecochallenge about proper food storage and I learned a lot. I've already begun changing my practices to ensure food lasts longer and doesn't wind up spoiled and in the compost when it could have been eaten. Check out this ecochallenge - it's very informative. -
Lisa Brenskelle 7/03/2024 5:39 PMOn my short 15 minute walk around my neighborhood & local park today, I picked up 7 pieces of trash, of which 6 were plastic. And this is since yesterday, when I walked the same route & picked up litter. -
Lisa Brenskelle 7/03/2024 3:31 PMFor those plastic items that are not recyclable, and cannot be eliminated, consider a Zero Waste box from Terracycle. Check them out at: https://shop.terracycle.com/en-US -
Lisa Brenskelle 7/02/2024 6:22 PMI went for a short walk today in my neighborhood and to my local park, and picked up 7 pieces of trash, of which 6 were either plastic or contained plastic.-
Mary Hanks 7/03/2024 9:10 PMIt makes me sad to think how much plastic folks are just tossing out on the street...but it makes me happy to know there are people like you disposing of that plastic appropriately. Lisa, thank you for making a difference!

Lisa Brenskelle 7/02/2024 6:50 AMJust got an e-mail from the Public Interest Group about reducing plastic related to your 4th of July BBQ/picnic. Here are the tips:
1. Shop sustainably for picnic/BBQ supplies (use reusable grocery bags, avoid items with excessive packaging, buy at local farmers market)
2. Skip single use plates/cutlery/cups in favor of re-usable (you can ask people to bring their own, too)
3. Ditch plastic straws (skip straws, or offer paper/bamboo/steel)
4. Offer beverages that don't come in plastic bottles
5. Choose eco-friendly decorations
