Natalie's actions

Bathroom

Sustainable Suds

In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Clean Plate Club

When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Eco Deodorant

Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Brush with Bamboo

In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

A Greener Shower

Most conventional shower curtain liners are made from polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), which contains chlorine, phthalates, and plasticizers, and typically need replaced often. When it's time to replace my shower curtain liner, I will replace it with a plastic-free option and research the best ways to care for it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Practice Sustainable Fashion

I will spend 40 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Go Strawless

Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Pearly Whites

Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Dive Into Expiration Dates

Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 15 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Rethink Returns

While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 15 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Homemade or Refillable Cleaners

Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Give Veggie Scraps Another Life

Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Plastic Free TP

Most toilet paper is wrapped in plastic #4, or low-density polyethylene - a thin plastic film that cannot be recycled back into more plastic film. To avoid this plastic wrapping, I will purchase toilet paper wrapped in paper instead, or use a reusable toilet paper option.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Proper Clothing Care

All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 10 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Eco Detergent

Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Get Scrappy

Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Numbers Everywhere

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

COMPLETED

Study

Estimate Your Ecological Footprint

I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Start Composting

Composting isn't just good for soil! Composting your food scraps and other organic materials decreases your overall trash output, so you don't have to take the trash out as often and extend the life of your trash bags (i.e. use less plastic!). This month, I will start a compost collection at home, work, or school and avoid sending 1 pounds of food waste to landfill each day.

COMPLETED 6

Follow the Chasing Arrows

The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

Go For a Walk

Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 20 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

Keep My Community Clean

In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Become a Recycling Pro
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/23/2024 11:33 AM
I've found that textile recycling is mots difficult to find, but apparently BC is known for it! While Return-it had a textile recycling pilot program that ended in 2022, there are other smaller businesses that accept textiles for recycling such as Our Social Fabric and Revivify.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Proper Clothing Care
Fast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/18/2024 12:28 PM
Finding pieces that I love regardless of trends motivates me to dress the way that makes me happy. Finding pieces that can be mixed and matched to help layer for the seasons also helps reduce the amount of seasonal wardrobe changes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Brush with Bamboo
What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/15/2024 3:38 PM
The compostability of the handle of the toothbrush helps eliminate so much plastic! While the small staples and bristles aren't usually compostable, a great way to get others to follow suit is to put in perspective just how many toothbrushes one person in their lifetime and they all end up in the landfill.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/15/2024 3:35 PM
I was surprised to see how much societal factors or circumstances in our lives that may be beyond our control influence our ecological footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/15/2024 3:33 PM
My entrance is facing the alley, so when I leave or enter my place I often see garbage left around. By going out of my way to pick up the garbage in the alley, I'm better able to recognize that not all litter is dumped on purpose, quite a bit of it comes from improper securing of bins, and either the wind or wildlife can spread it around.

I have to pick up the trash around my yard and street constantly due to trash pickup or negligent neighbors/visitors. I enjoy disposing of the litter and seeing a clean street but I wish we were all better about it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/12/2024 11:05 PM
Personalization of clothes! Being able to paint, dye, embroider, and patch clothing is a fantastic way to express yourself as well as learn a new skill.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Clean Plate Club
How easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/12/2024 11:04 AM
I had concerns about the pricepoint of non-standard soaps. However, finding alternatives (and even bulk refill containers for soap I already use) as been surprisingly easy.

    • Natalie Butler's avatar
      Natalie Butler 7/12/2024 10:44 PM
The soap dispensary on main street is a good option I've used. The student union building on the UBC campus also has a soap dispensing vending machine! The No Frills near my house carries cardboard-based jugs of the 7th generation dish soap that I usually use to refill my one plastic bottle.

That's awesome! Where do you go for your soap needs?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Follow the Chasing Arrows
Recycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/12/2024 11:01 AM
I would love to dive deeper into the local control of Vancouver's recycling program. GFL Environmental provides the recycling service on behalf of recycle BC. This Ontario-based company acquired Smithrite Disposal Ltd. who was previously in charge of recycling collection and management. Despite the name, GFL is still described as a "waste management company" and their website does not offer actual specifics on their methods of treating what they collect.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Go For a Walk
What have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/12/2024 10:40 AM
I've noticed myself paying attention to my surroundings more as I go on walks with no definite destination, which in turn has helped me notice all the beautiful nature around me.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Pearly Whites
Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

    Natalie Butler's avatar
    Natalie Butler 7/12/2024 12:37 AM
Spreading the awareness of toothpaste tabs! They're unfortunately not widespread but come in a variety of containers that are much easier to recycle. It could be as simple as advocating for these types of alternatives to be stocked. Bonus of toothpaste tabs is that because they're solid, it's easier to take on the plane!
