Joey's actions
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Community
Share My Actions
One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 60 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 15 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
Who says we need 5 blades and a ribbon of shaving cream on every $5 razor blade cartridge, when a single blade causes less irritation and costs 92% less? This month, I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 30 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Kitchen
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 10 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Community
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 5 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Advocate For Better Food PackagingSingle use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2024 10:04 AMI would say that there are 500 times more plastics in the ocean than there are stars in the sky. All seabirds have plastic in them, and it is even floating in the air. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Get Rid of GlitterHow can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2024 10:02 AMI found a fun alternative to glitter - mix sugar and food colouring, and then dry it out. It sticks to skin, and is just sugar when it slips off. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2024 9:58 AMIt helps me to think about and see all the aminals that may have eaten that litter, knowing I did something for them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Balloons BlowHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Joey Byrtus 7/23/2024 8:59 AMWhen I was a kid, I really believed that balloons released into the sky would fly off to some mystical place called Balloonia (based on a book). When I realized, no, they eventually fall back to earth and get stuck in animals guts, I wasn't a fan.
And mylar balloons are terrible for electricity -- one Valentines' day weekend a heart-shaped balloon touched and exploded the power generator across the street - my side of the street had power but I had no internet for three days it was terrible.-
Ria Cousineau 7/23/2024 9:21 AMI had a set of mylar balloons take up residence in my palm tree. I believe they said “2024”.
I could not get them out soon enough and the mockingbirds abandoned their nest in the tree. I was very angry and sad.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Brush with BambooWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Joey Byrtus 7/23/2024 8:56 AMI like bamboo toothbrushes - the bristles feel firmer and it feels more like I'm scraping at my teeth, and I'm not rubbing them down with plastic. Also, they get "grungyier" quicker, which may lead to more purchases but they'll stay healthier and more effective - vs the old plastic toothbrush that "lasts" forever even though the bristles are basically useless after a time -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Proper Clothing CareFast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?
Joey Byrtus 7/19/2024 10:58 PMugug I hate "fast fashion" mostly because "La Mode" is always so lame and I'm super cheap which means I don't want to replace stuff so I want to buy stuff that lasts --- I'm cheap but I think ahead and remember that $5 dress is going to last 5 minutes.-
Alyssa Tyree 7/20/2024 4:58 AMAgreed. I also just like thrift stores because there is so much variety and many of the ones in my area are non profits for good causes. -
Joey Byrtus 7/19/2024 11:02 PMAlso that $5 dress was very much made by an underpaid worker and sourced materials from very much non-ecological ways and also oo the profile pic in reply view is a rouleux triangle <3

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Joey Byrtus 7/18/2024 9:03 AMI always have my backpack on my, with my bags in them. Also carrying Furoshiki, a kerchief-like cloth you can use for wrapping anything. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Estimate Your Ecological FootprintWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Joey Byrtus 7/18/2024 9:00 AMThe calculator assumes if I'm not biking, then I'm using a motor vehicle. I use neither, the only material cost of my commute is my shoes.
