Ashley's actions

Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Keep My Community Clean

In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Fill a Water Bottle

Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottles a day.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Clean Plate Club

When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Advocate for Office Reusables

I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Follow the Chasing Arrows

The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 20 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

A Greener Shower

Most conventional shower curtain liners are made from polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), which contains chlorine, phthalates, and plasticizers, and typically need replaced often. When it's time to replace my shower curtain liner, I will replace it with a plastic-free option and research the best ways to care for it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Learn about Environmental Justice

Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Family + Pets

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Practice Sustainable Fashion

I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Sustainable Suds

In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Eco Deodorant

Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Declutter Sustainably

While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Travel Toiletries

Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Plant a Garden

I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Rethink Returns

While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 10 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Is it trash...or a trash bag?

The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Save Jars for Reuse

Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Give Some Green Gratitude

Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Choose Reusable Food Storage

I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Family + Pets

Repurpose Items

I will repurpose and donate items in my home for second hand use.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Mindful Water Use

I will be mindful daily of water use in the house.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Family + Pets

Thoughtful Toys

I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Family + Pets

Get Rid of Glitter

I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Advocate For Better Food Packaging

I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Homemade or Refillable Cleaners

Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

COMPLETED

Recycle My Tech

There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Rethink Returns
How has learning what happens to returns influenced how you make purchasing decisions?

    Ashley Chambers 7/21/2024 12:48 PM
I have previously worked to reduce my online purchase footprint and after researching return processing for several online retailors, it has solidified my decision to reduce online shopping intentions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Declutter Sustainably
Compared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/21/2024 12:46 PM
Instead of driving and donating clothing options to local non-profits, I instead posted a picture in my neighborhood page and let families come on their own time to a box on my door to take what was best suited for them. I was happy to see everything was rehomed in a few hours. It inspired others to do the same. It was nice to see one action inspire others to do the same as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Plant a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/21/2024 12:42 PM
I planted a small indoor garden on my window sill. I am hoping I can grow a few options that are typically sold in plastic containers such as tomatoes and cucumbers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Sustainable Suds
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/21/2024 12:36 PM
By using a refillable option, I have noticed I am more cognizant of what I am using and when.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/21/2024 12:36 PM
When recently traveling, it was nice to utilize my refillable containers and not worry about the single use options leaking.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Save Jars for Reuse
What's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/11/2024 10:52 AM
I tend to reuse jars for plant propagations.

We keep small ones around for salad dressing - perfect for making, storage, and safe leak-free transport!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Kitchen Is it trash...or a trash bag?
It's only "single-use" if it's only used once! What are some other creative ways to reuse unavoidable "single-use" items?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/11/2024 10:51 AM
I attempt to repurpose them for a second use, but if I can't repurpose I look to find the appropriate way to dispose/recycle of the item.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Choose Reusable Food Storage
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/11/2024 10:49 AM
I often check goodwill for reusable glass containers or storage options to avoid additional storage waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/07/2024 8:01 AM
I learned how to make a few basic products- not only will be be financially beneficial, but will help reduce my waste as well as the ingredients can be used for multiple products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Ashley Chambers's avatar
    Ashley Chambers 7/07/2024 5:10 AM
Whether picking up litter alone or with a clean up team, it allows you to gain a greater respect for the community that you live in.
