Reflection QuestionPersonal Care See the GreenTake a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?
Jane Cirigliano 7/23/2020 2:02 PMI switched to 30 day lenses, and I also learned that my eye doctor has a recycling program right through their office! I’ve already started a collection for my next visit :)-
Jane Cirigliano 7/27/2020 1:43 PMIt’s really a thing! My eye doctor recycles the contact packaging too, so I’ve just been emptying the solution and putting the old lenses in the empty packaging, which is even more plastic. Here’s where I found local recycling centers: https://www.biotrueonedaylenses.com/one-by-one-recycling -
Alison Edwards 7/27/2020 11:51 AMI have never heard about contact recycling. Do you have to keep the used lenses in solution or what?

Reflection QuestionCommunity Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutralWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Jane Cirigliano 7/10/2020 2:46 PMI learned that my biggest areas for improvement are in the Home and Living category. This challenge has helped me cut my beverage, food and snacks categories down to be my smallest impact!-
Jane Cirigliano 7/14/2020 2:33 PMThat’s a great idea, Alison! We’ve been struggling with good delivery options during this pandemic. We’ve been doing grocery delivery to limit our contact, but they use plastic bags :( My family has used a meal service in the past called Sun Basket. We would recommend them - they source local farms and all of their packaging is recyclable. They also have some great vegetarian options! -
Alison Edwards 7/14/2020 6:46 AMAnother teammate said that she has recently started receiving CSA boxes from Yellowbird Foodshed. My husband and I have been apprehensive about signing up in the past but it looks like Yellowbird has lots of great farms that they support. I think we will start buying from them as farmers markets that we used to enjoy going to don't seem likely to happen this summer. Thanks for the reminder about 'you pick' places, we'll have to do that too! -
Jane Cirigliano 7/13/2020 6:46 PMAlison, absolutely! I have had some great fruit and salads so far this month. It’s such a great added bonus that this challenge helps us make healthier eating choices as we reduce our plastic consumption. I was looking for a way to avoid those pesky plastic berry containers, and I found a local farm where I can pick fresh blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. Definitely on my to do list! -
Alison Edwards 7/13/2020 6:44 AMJane, do you feel like your eating healthier snacks and food in attempt to avoid packaging? I have noticed that I have been eating a lot more fruit throughout the first 13 days of this challenge because I can purchase it without pesky plastic packaging. I continually have to remind myself not to reach for the plastic produce bag out of habit, though!

Reflection QuestionFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Jane Cirigliano 7/06/2020 5:37 PMI have noticed more events and restaurants switching to paper straws, and I’ve heard people commenting on them. I overheard a couple discussing that the paper straws are to save sea turtles. The message is getting out there - sort of! -
Reflection QuestionFood Lobby for ReusablesWhat are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?
Jane Cirigliano 7/03/2020 2:59 AMMy employer provides utensils, so they would eliminate an ongoing expense by getting reusables. They also provide water bottles because we have non-potable water. Many of us have started bringing our own water from home. -
Jane Cirigliano 7/02/2020 11:53 AMWe had a company picnic For the holiday today, and I brought my own reusable utensils. It was a great conversation starter! -
Jane Cirigliano 6/13/2020 6:12 AMI love the wonderful resources available through the Plastic Free EcoChallenge. It hasn’t even started yet, and I’m finding great ideas and tips for living more sustainably. I just read a great article about using rubber gloves to pick up pet hair. Can’t wait to try it!-
joy kotheimer 6/19/2020 1:26 PMThanks for joining our team Jane! Nice work with the new cat hair pickup using gloves! We love sharing ideas! -
Jane Cirigliano 6/14/2020 6:49 PMIt worked out amazingly well. Our cat leans against his favorite pillow a lot, and his fine hair is hard to get off of it. The fluff came right off! No more rollers for me! -
Alison Edwards 6/14/2020 6:06 PMJane, I love that you are learning new things, I am too! Please let us know how this rubber glove trick works out.
