Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.

Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.

Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sheila Coates 7/28/2024 11:55 AMI watched a 15 min documentary about how plastic recycling is not meeting expectations. Later I went to the local Walmart to recycle my bottles and cans. The plastic bottle machines were missing, and new can machines replace them. Mgmt told me that was a mistake, but didn't know if upper mgmt was aware or that the bottle machines will come back. Kind of a bummer that I have to pay a recycle tax expecting a refund and having to search where & how to get it. I put the bag out in my recycle bin and a local homeless person picked it out. -
Sheila Coates 7/28/2024 4:18 AMNot necessarily a plastics only challenge answer. I have helped 2 families reassemble their lives after tornadoes, helping to sort their garbage into bins for the trash companies. That made me wonder how or when plastics will become such a priority that people will gather and make a difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join a Cleanup EffortWhat was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort?
Sheila Coates 7/28/2024 4:04 AMI have visited several cities hit by extreme weather. The most unexpected piece of trash was a family grieving over the loss of their home. I have tried to recycle them often delivering art supplies, soccer and basketballs, meals, and friendship that continues to this day. (written 7-28) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Sheila Coates 7/28/2024 3:55 AMToday, I filled the garbage cans at my along with another unsung volunteer. She called the city and reported them filled. I took my bag home and put the plastics in my recycle bin. I added fanny pack to my re-shop list. I definitely need to carry gloves and a bag to bring my treasures home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Go For a WalkWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Sheila Coates 7/28/2024 3:49 AMI live by a park. I am always amazed that the area is trashed around a holiday. When I walked in this morning, the left side was markedly different than the right, so I picked up there. Sometime later I met the other "park cleaner" who was surprised to see me. Maybe next time, we will do more than pick up together until the garbage cans were filled. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Go StrawlessHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Sheila Coates 7/28/2024 3:32 AMSeveral of the places I frequent have started asking if we want straws at our table. 2 have started using paper straws. One simply states on the drink page that straws are byos (bring your own straws.)
