Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Kitchen
Plastic-Free Produce Storage
Produce doesn't need to be stored in plastic bags to stay fresh! I will learn how to properly store my produce to extend its freshness without single-use plastic.
Bathroom
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Bathroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Kitchen
Get Scrappy
Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.

Krystle Copeland 7/08/2024 7:58 AMI watched the 25 ways to reuse leftover food scraps. There are some really great ideas! I have regrown green onions before. -
Krystle Copeland 7/06/2024 7:09 AMI am in some free groups that we trade and give items we no longer need or want. It's nice to help those in actual need. We share food as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Krystle Copeland 7/06/2024 7:04 AMThe production of plastic hurts the people making it, even if they think they are safe. Also, all the chemicals leeched into the environment that have an impact on humans and animals. We don't even know we are breathing this toxic waste! -
Krystle Copeland 7/06/2024 6:56 AMThe pre survey on my plastic use was eye opening. I have a lot to learn still. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomCompared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?
Krystle Copeland 7/06/2024 6:44 AMJust being more intentional and thoughtful of where my unused items are going. I didn't know that many donated items go in the trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenIn the United States, 30-40% of all edible food goes to waste. What are some other ways you can reduce food waste in your home?
Krystle Copeland 7/05/2024 10:05 PMIf our kid doesn't finish her food, we will add back to the leftovers to eat another night. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenAlthough the dishwasher saves time and water, some people enjoy washing dishes by hand for the mindfulness practice it can provide. What are some other ways you can practice mindfulness in the kitchen?
Krystle Copeland 7/05/2024 9:58 PMWe use a refillable water container in the fridge that filters the water. We fill our water bottles multiple times a day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Krystle Copeland 7/05/2024 9:52 PMThere is always something that was intended for one purpose that can be used for something else. It mashed me think of artwork. So many people recycle what one person would call trash, but an artist sees it as a treasure or the missing piece to their puzzle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Krystle Copeland 7/05/2024 9:50 PMSome days we are better at being plastic free than others, but at least we are trying to do better and we are acknowledging that their is an issue.
