  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

I try to carry a set of reusable utensils especially when I'm going to eat at a place that usually serves disposables. I feel like if even one person notices, sometimes that can make a difference and inspire others.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Containers
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

I try my best to request no extra utensils or sauce packets especially when ordering food to go.

Even now that the ecochallenge is over, I definitely plan on continuing these habits. Ever since I partook in this challenge several years ago, I've slowly been changing my habits to reduce my plastic consumption.

I'm not quite ready to switch over to shampoo bars just yet. I'm still trying to finish the shampoos I currently have. Waste not, want not. :)

If you know anyone that already uses them, see if they'll cut off a slice for you to sample. :)
  • Reflection Question

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Julianne Doctor's avatar

I like that there are much less chemicals in shampoo bars than in traditional commercial shampoos. Plus, shampoo bars don't contain all that extra water just to be packaged in plastic.
  • Reflection Question

Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I can definitely vote with my dollar and choose to spend it on products that are more environmentally and ethically sourced.

I'm almost out of my traditional tube toothpaste. I think I'm going to give the toothpaste tablets a try. Thanks again for the suggestion, Jessica!

If you don't like the first brand you try, don't give up! There are so many different variations on them with different textures and flavors. And the mouthwash tablets are pretty great too!

Keeping my community clean helps me take pride in where I live as well as showing respect for all the living creatures I share this planet with.

I chose to watch "Dirty Business: What Really Happens to your Recycling" by Sky News. It's so crazy to hear just how little of our waste actually gets recycled and the fact that it travels around the world just to sit and pile up somewhere else. It really is all about the bottom line.

I need to replace my windshield wipers but how do I get around purchasing the plastic they come packaged in? There's just no avoiding some pieces of plastic for now.
