Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Family + Pets
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Family + Pets
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 4 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Start Composting
Composting isn't just good for soil! Composting your food scraps and other organic materials decreases your overall trash output, so you don't have to take the trash out as often and extend the life of your trash bags (i.e. use less plastic!). This month, I will start a compost collection at home, work, or school and avoid sending 2 pounds of food waste to landfill each day.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 15 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Stephen Duprey 8/01/2024 7:36 AMEnjoyed many ways to conserve and reduce consumption of items, this message needs to be spread to larger groups.
I recently bought a Battery storage and tester from Home Depo and liked it so much I bought them for Christmas gifts for all my staff they run under 15 dollars.. -
Stephen Duprey 7/31/2024 6:21 AMI brought in extra water bottles from home for our staff to use, instead of buying plastic water bottles. -
Stephen Duprey 7/30/2024 2:53 PMHaving stock piled canned goods during COVID some items are at their expiration point. We make a point of using those items up and relying on more healthy choices. -
Stephen Duprey 7/30/2024 2:51 PMBrush your dogs hair outdoors, birds love hair to weave into their nests for additional strength.-
Gretchen Lira 7/30/2024 3:08 PMOoh! I love this idea. Very smart.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Start CompostingDo an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?

Stephen Duprey 7/24/2024 12:35 PMOffering used metal water bottles to our facility for all to use as their own.
We have had our water purify serviced and filters changed, they upgraded the older unit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Use What You HaveBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Stephen Duprey 7/23/2024 8:40 AMShare extra tools with homeowners in the office so they don't have to buy them.
Most people in the trades have extra hammers, sockets, plyers, screwdrivers they can give away.
Donate wood and tools to local schools and theaters. -
