Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Use Reusable Baby Wipes
I will make better choices for the environment and my baby's bum by using reusable baby wipes most or all of the time.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 1 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Chris Easlea 7/31/2023 11:05 AMThe mosquito bites definitely aren't a benefit, but seeing the other bug life that thrives in the gardens is so wonderful! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Rubber Glove Pet Hair RemovalWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
Chris Easlea 7/31/2023 11:03 AMTheir personalities and mannerisms are so funny and different from one another, aloof, cuddly, shy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Travel EatingWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Chris Easlea 7/28/2023 12:07 PMThis is so easy to do! My wife and I will make a homemade trail mix for long drives, not only is is cheaper than premade, but we can load it with things we want to eat. And now that we have a daughter, we can prevent a toddler meltdown by having her favorite snacks on the ready instead of potentially not finding a food she wants at our destination -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Thoughtful ToysDoes your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?
Chris Easlea 7/28/2023 11:57 AMNot necessarily, she'll throw them regardless! But when we go to the playground, we'll try to also put some time into more natural play in the field or by trees. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Chris Easlea 7/28/2023 11:54 AMIt can open your eyes on the types of trash people throw out, and where they congregate and maybe you can work with your township or local community group to set up more trashcans in those areas! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Chris Easlea 7/28/2023 11:53 AMAt least here at the aquarium, we have a kitchen to clean your reusable lunch containers, silverware, water bottles etc so it is so easy to finish lunch and then clean up in the kitchen instead of throwing away your utensils (even if they're more eco friendly.) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Thrifty PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Chris Easlea 7/27/2023 7:13 AMSome things are just silly to buy new, such as kids clothing! Up until 2 years old, children's clothes are labeled for 3 month increments, imagine buying yourself a new wardrobe every 3 months, you'd be broke by the end of the year, so not only does buying used save you money, but used clothing is normally still perfectly usable and in good condition.-
Alicia Longo 7/27/2023 11:35 AMYES! Luckily, Hazel has an older cousin who sends all her old clothes our way! I'd say at least half of her wardrobe is second hand :)
And we always pass along or donate clothes she grows out of!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Choose Reusable Food StorageHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Chris Easlea 7/27/2023 6:14 AMSee if the disposables can be reused more often or repurposed! An example is the magnetic scrubbing pads we use here at the aquarium on our coral exhibits. The plastic part sometimes get a bit worn down after a month or two of use, and when I was researching them, people suggested sharpening them with a file or knife, which I just did and made it practically brand new again! This will mean each pad gets much more use and doesn't need to be thrown out nearly as often! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Chris Easlea 7/14/2023 7:21 AMI like to keep my reusable bags in my car, because to me the most difficult part is remembering to bring bags with me before leaving to go to a grocery store.
