Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 30 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 30 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Even when advertised as "flushable" these wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but instead combine with fat to create massive clogs. This month, I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 30 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 1 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Bathroom
See the Green
An estimated 50,000lbs (23,000kg) of contact lenses end up in sewage sludge in the US each year. This month, I will learn how to recycle used contact lenses and packaging or switch to wearing glasses instead.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom See the GreenTake a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?
Darby Epperson 7/24/2024 3:26 PMThinking about my daily use of contacts and the waste they create encourages me to take the next steps in more seriously looking into Lasik to reduce my footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Clean the Dryer VentWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Bidet All DayThere are many benefits to using a bidet, including health, environmental, and economic benefits. Which of these benefits was most influential for you in making the switch to a bidet, and what has your experience been like since?
Darby Epperson 7/24/2024 3:15 PMThe economic weight of buying toilet paper regularly was a leading factor in making the switch and wanting to be more conscious as a family in what we are consuming. Excited to see how it works! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Darby Epperson 7/24/2024 3:13 PMIt helps relieve the pressure of not chasing perfection! Allowing room to reach for what I can in the day rather than stress about my lack of encourages me to keep moving forward in making plastic-elimination a priority. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Go StrawlessHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Darby Epperson 7/24/2024 3:11 PMYes! More restaurants and cafes will now ask if you want a straw first and it’s usually a more more eco friendly option rather than plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Darby Epperson 7/24/2024 3:10 PMI can encourage coworkers, friends, and family to invest in utensils that can stay at the office or travel with them so there’s never the excuse of not having what you need! Keeping single use items out of landfills will only help us provide a better future for generations to come. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Go For a WalkWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Darby Epperson 7/24/2024 3:08 PMGoing for a walk helps me center my day and connect with nature before heading into the office. Also allows me more one on one time with my partner when they can join me and we’re able to check in!-
Gretchen Lira 7/30/2024 3:25 PMI love that you do that, and what a great way to reconnect with your partner as well. I walk from my office to the grocery store at lunch every day to try to get those steps in, and it gives me a chance to choose some fresh fruit or a salad for lunch instead of some of the more fattening options at the office.
