Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Study
Better Highlighters
Instead of buying new plastic highlighters, I will simply use colored pencils instead for all of my highlighting needs.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 20 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 2 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Kitchen
Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Whole Foods MealsShare your favorite whole foods-based meal recipe with us!
Jeanette Favaloro 7/01/2024 10:08 PMI made spaghetti sauce using fresh ingredients, even the tomatoes. The only thing that I didn't make from scratch was the pasta! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Meatless MealsShare your favorite "Meatless Monday" recipe with us!
Jeanette Favaloro 7/01/2024 10:06 PMI made pesto and added it to pasta. Pesto is super easy! Here is the recipe I used:
1/2 c. olive oil
2 cloves of garlic (I use more, but I like garlc)
Most of a bunch of fresh basil
Some parsley or spinach
1/4 c. of pine nuts or walnuts (I didn't have any on hand and it was fine without it)
1/2 c. shredded parmesan
About 2 T of lemon juice (optional)
Salt to taste
If you are using the nuts, dry sauté them along with garlic in their husks until the nuts are golden. Remove the husks from the garlic and then put the nuts and garlic into a food processor/blender and pulse. Add the remaining ingredients (except the lemon juice and salt) and blend until smooth. Add salt and lemon juice to taste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Thoughtful ToysDoes your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?
Jeanette Favaloro 7/01/2024 9:45 PMWhen we were going through some of our clutter, we found a small bottle of bubbles. My daughter kept her cat busy for at least 30 minutes, and lots of laughter resulted. Later my son also found a bottle that someone gave him at a birthday party. He immediately knew to give it to his sister. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Better HighlightersWhat did you think of this action? Is this something you think you can turn into a long-term habit to avoid plastic highlighters?
Jeanette Favaloro 7/01/2024 9:40 PMI don't use highlighters much, but this goal made me reconsider when I do. It is just as easy to use a colored pencil to draw attention to a word or phrase. We should teach school children about highlighting with colored pencils.-
Monterey Bay Aquarium 7/03/2024 12:18 PMColored pencils are a fantastic way to use what you already have at your disposal. And, if anyone truly NEEDS a highlighter, there is a pencil option that works really well like this one.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Give Veggie Scraps Another LifeMaking veggie broth from scraps doesn't just reduce waste, it can also save you a ton of money! What are some of the ways you use veggie broth in your kitchen?
Jeanette Favaloro 7/01/2024 9:36 PMI normally save chicken bones to make broth, but hadn't really thought about vegetable broth.-
Makenna Griffith 7/01/2024 9:40 PMVeggie broth is awesome for plenty of soups! It’s hard for me to save enough scraps for veggie broth because I normally feed my worms my veggies!
