Marianne's actions
Study
Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 60 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Kitchen
Plastic-Free Produce Storage
Produce doesn't need to be stored in plastic bags to stay fresh! I will learn how to properly store my produce to extend its freshness without single-use plastic.
Bathroom
A Greener Shower
Most conventional shower curtain liners are made from polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), which contains chlorine, phthalates, and plasticizers, and typically need replaced often. When it's time to replace my shower curtain liner, I will replace it with a plastic-free option and research the best ways to care for it.
Study
Better Highlighters
Instead of buying new plastic highlighters, I will simply use colored pencils instead for all of my highlighting needs.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Kitchen
Better Gum
Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 30 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Marianne Fox 7/25/2024 4:59 PMAbout to go on vacation for a week, definitely the hardest thing to try and stay eco friendly on, but at least we have our own water bottles (and found a brita filter that's reusable), cups for coffee and tea we can wash and reuse, bringing own bar soaps/shampoos. Helps to be driving too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you think of this action? Is this something you think you can turn into a long-term habit to avoid plastic highlighters?
Marianne Fox 7/04/2024 9:35 AMConfused why this is a daily task, learned about them in one day.-

Krystina Jarvis 7/04/2024 1:19 PMHi Marianne! This is a "daily" action because the intention behind it was that you could check it off every time you use a sustainable highlighter alternative throughout the month, to build the habit :) I hope that makes sense! Feel free to email the planning team at [email protected] if you have any other questions! 💙

Marianne Fox 7/04/2024 9:34 AMLearned about highlighter pencils, did this once when a school project required colors pens didn't have and used colored pencils. A really easy switch, less to buy too since colored pencils have more use than just highlighting, unlike highlighters. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Marianne Fox 7/04/2024 9:31 AMAt Target, went inside and used bag instead of convenient drive up which would be on plastic. Gave Starbucks a resuable mug but they gave my drin in plastic anyway, I at least used my metal straw. Win some/lose some.-
Tamara Righettini 7/10/2024 4:44 PMIf I forget my bag, I put all the purchases back in the cart after buying them and then unload them into my car. Then I go in my house, get a bad and load them all up to bring in. More work but I also get a little more exercise!
