Tracey's actions
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 4 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
compost at work left overs from lunch
another way to reduce things in the landfill.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Bathroom
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Study
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Study
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Fill a Water BottleInvestigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Tracey Gauthier 7/31/2024 11:59 AMResearch who has done this and call or write to the corporations who are doing this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join a Cleanup EffortWhat was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort?
Tracey Gauthier 7/30/2024 6:58 AMNothing surprising but there were still a lot of cigarette butts. Also partial wrappers.-
Alyssa Tyree 7/30/2024 7:18 AMWhen we do clean ups on our natural trail I am happy to say we don't see a lot of cigarette butts, but yeah snack wrappers. So many snack wrappers.

Tracey Gauthier 7/29/2024 9:42 AMI am definitely more aware of the amount of plastics used in packaging. I am trying to make good decisions by purchasing products with as little plastic as possible. -
Tracey Gauthier 7/25/2024 9:52 AMCome on Team Va Aquarium. Florida Aquarium is sneaking up on us. They are within a 2200 points of us. The gap is decreasing. Go out and pick up trash, use reusable bags when shopping. Skip the straw, Don't forget to log in your progress. Don't let Florida Aquarium catch or pass us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Homemade or Refillable CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Tracey Gauthier 7/25/2024 9:47 AMBy making my own cleaning products in a reusable spray bottle , (1/4 cup dawn dish soap, 1/2 cup of distilled vinegar and 1 cup of hot water)I am using a product that works with items I have around the house. I will not have waste of buying multiple cleaners, especially those that don't work. I would put the above mixture sprayed on tubs, floors, cabinets, counters..... It's amazing. With elbow grease your stuff will look clean.-
Daytona Begle 7/25/2024 9:56 AMIt's nice having 1 product that can work for so many different parts of your home too instead of having 20 different bottles!

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Tracey Gauthier 7/24/2024 7:53 AMI am taking on the mantra of making progress and accepting I'm not perfect. I am starting to look at ways to constantly improve.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Tracey Gauthier 7/24/2024 7:52 AMLeave them in the back of my car. If I forget the bags after purchase, I load items back in a cart if I can't carry them and load my car from the cart. When I get home, I get my bags out of the garage and load the items in the bags to carry them into the house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Go StrawlessHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Tracey Gauthier 7/24/2024 7:50 AMAt many places plastic straws are still the norm and they give them to you even if you don't ask for them. Other places have no straws or paper ones. Need to continue to build awareness.
