Carol's actions
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Better Highlighters
Instead of buying new plastic highlighters, I will simply use colored pencils instead for all of my highlighting needs.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you think of this action? Is this something you think you can turn into a long-term habit to avoid plastic highlighters?

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Carol Graham 7/12/2024 2:02 PMThe ecological footprint calculator said we would need 3.1 earths if everyone lived like me and my personal Earth Overshoot day was April 25. That’s a little better than Canada’s date of March 15th, but there’s plenty of room for improvement. I was surprised that my shelter consumption category was more than double the others - that’s a challenging one to try to lower. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsTime to brag! Show us a photo of what you repaired and tell us about the experience!
Carol Graham 7/09/2024 5:54 PMI’d gotten something splashed on one leg of a perfectly good pair of plain white capris, and I tried EVERYthing to get the stain out - to no avail. They were too new to be relegated to “painting pants”. I thought about cutting them off to turn into shorts, but I’m not very good at sewing.
So I decided to cover up the stains with some art . . . I now have a truly unique pair of summer pants, and I LOVE how they turned out!-

Julie Mapes 7/09/2024 6:11 PMHi Carol, that is a great idea! I hate when clothes are ruined with bleach and unable to be saved. Thinking outside of the box is a great way to save! I have some jeans that I love, but they are wearing thin on the inner thigh area. I have been brainstorming how to salvage these since the rest are still great shape, and not look like patchwork done. lol. This brings me inspiration!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Carol Graham 7/06/2024 8:31 PMI take a litter-picker and a bucket when we walk around our area. It’s been a conversation starter and I’ve met several of our neighbours. I put any recyclables in the blue bins before tossing the rest.-
Setera Miller 7/06/2024 9:12 PMI need a little liter-picker! Cleaning up the community one piece of liter at a time! Great job!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomCompared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?
Carol Graham 7/03/2024 5:00 PMI am a BIG fan of Buy Nothing Groups on FaceBook. While receiving free stuff is dandy - it feels AWEsome when I can grant a wish for an item someone truly wants or needs that’s just gathering dust in my house…it’s like being a Fairy Godmother! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDid you encounter any resistance from your local coffee shop when trying to use your own mug? How did you navigate it, and how can you advocate from this to be a more commonplace practice in your community?
Carol Graham 7/03/2024 9:36 AMI’ve never had anyone refuse to fill my reusable mug, but I have seen them fill a paper cup with coffee, pour it into my mug, then toss out the paper cup! When I asked why they wouldn’t just pour it into my mug, they’d been taught it was the only was to ensure they gave the ‘correct’ amount of coffee. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
Carol Graham 7/02/2024 6:04 PMI cleaned it last Spring (I have a reminder to do it once a year). The hardest part is wiggling the dryer forward to get at the duct at the back. But BONUS….I found a sock back there that I was sure my dryer had eaten!
