Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Kitchen
Visit the Butcher
I will purchase meats and cheeses from the deli counter or a butcher shop, and use my own containers to do so.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
When we wash our clothes, the heat and friction causes our clothes to wear down, releasing microfibers into the water stream. To combat and prevent these microfibers as much as possible, in addition to following best laundry practices, I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Plastic-Free Produce Storage
Produce doesn't need to be stored in plastic bags to stay fresh! I will learn how to properly store my produce to extend its freshness without single-use plastic.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Study
Divest and Reinvest
Does your savings account, retirement account, or investment account support the fossil fuel (and plastics) industry? This month, I will spend 30 minutes investigating where my investments (and where my bank's investments) are going, divest from the fossil fuel industry, and reinvest in ways that are more in alignment with my values.

Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.
Kitchen
Fight Local Food Waste
Who says saving money and saving the planet don't go together? Using an app like Too Good To Go or Flashfood, I'll help rescue food from local bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.

Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 20 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Makenna Griffith 7/23/2024 8:42 PMWhat I did wrong today: impromptu grocery shopping so I didn’t have my reusable bags :( and my vegetable scraps wound up molding before I could make a stock
What I did right: more worms to redo my composter since I relocated them to the garden :) used my banana peel tea jar to fertilize my pepper plants today! Took my bag of electronics waste to Best Buy for recycling as well -
Makenna Griffith 7/21/2024 3:48 PMSo, I went through the drawer of cords today! I’m just upsetti spaghetti that I already finished a one time action for electronics recycling so I can’t add the 20 cords I found to add to the recycling numbers 😅😭-
Makenna Griffith 7/23/2024 8:47 PMI just tried I can undo the task but when I reaccomplish it I wasn’t able to put a new number in :( -
Christine Kitch 7/21/2024 5:13 PMI believe you can “edit” by undoing the action and then re-inputting the data.

Makenna Griffith 7/19/2024 7:41 PMHow’s everyone doing!? I’m exhausted but thinking I may try to complete my research challenges for the month soon! It’s been hectic but we all got this! -
Makenna Griffith 7/18/2024 5:13 PMFun fact an overnight hospital stay while needed is definitely not plastic free in the slightest. (I’m okay) but the last few days have been hectic and I have not been able to consistently do my part. I will say it was interesting to see the food they bring you for breakfast and lunch has reusable silverware but dinner is all one time use. I wonder if it’s a hospital schedule thing or a who ever was on shift thing -
Makenna Griffith 7/15/2024 9:46 PMSo I tried ordering my buddy the other day, turns out for whatever reason Amazon can’t ship it :(-

Makenna Griffith 7/14/2024 7:26 PMYesterday was my baby shower! I tried my best to keep it plastic free and used compostable silverware/plates biggest issue is we ran out and wound up using someone’s left over disposable paper plates from Christmas :( can’t beat myself up too bad over it no one is perfect and that’s what this challenge is about! Slowly getting better! Good luck everyone I know the one thing keeping me going is the fact that I’m able to put rotten veggies and paper towels/shredded newspapers etc in my garden for my worms 🪱:) happy Sunday! -
Makenna Griffith 7/12/2024 12:41 PMWell, I forgot to check in for 3 days :( I’m trying my best with all these medical appointments and family flying in! Hopefully I’ll be okay to continue walking, lately I’ve been having a lot of swelling and blood pressure issues but hopefully this baby stays good to go and I can do my plastic free July! -
Makenna Griffith 7/09/2024 5:34 PMIt’s not a jar but glass bottles aren’t something our recycling service can take soooo the dusty old empty bottle on the shelf has become the life giver for my garden :) -
Makenna Griffith 7/07/2024 5:49 PMI get that it’s plastic free July but is there anyway to make the sun less hot! Lol 😂 so my dog doesn’t 💩 on walks so I have tons of doggie doodoo baggies that I use to collect trash on our walks. Two birds one stone: I’m using up a product that would otherwise go to waste (yes I know my doggo is weird he also doesn’t use the bathroom when it’s raining outside 🥲) and it makes it easier to collect trash since I always have the baggies on me :)-
Christine Kitch 7/08/2024 5:16 AMI do the same! I get a tiny bit of pleasure scooping dog poo into a littered Starbucks cup. 🤷♀️ what goes around comes around!

Makenna Griffith 7/06/2024 9:08 PMIt is so hot lately! Going for a walk is super hard but I’m trying! Hopefully everyone’s doing well! I managed to feed my worms 🪱 some old lettuce scraps and I’m trying to trade some sage from my garden for parsley :) (the worms are from last years plastic free July challenge to reduce my food waste)
