Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Better Gum
Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 5 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Community
Share My Actions
One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Bathroom
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bedroom
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Study
Borrowed Books
The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.
Bathroom
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Family + Pets
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use a Reusable MugDid you encounter any resistance from your local coffee shop when trying to use your own mug? How did you navigate it, and how can you advocate from this to be a more commonplace practice in your community?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Estimate Your Ecological FootprintWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Tasha Haight 7/16/2024 10:12 AMI used an online ecological footprint calculator (www.footprintcalculator.org). My ecological footprint is pretty large and 51% of it comes from my transportation! I live in a very rural area where there is no public transport and I travel A LOT for work. My shelter took up the least, accounting for only 3% of my ecological footprint.
I am looking to moving in the future so while it won't help now, one thing I can look for when I do move is a place with more public transportation options to lower the footprint! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Better GumWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Tasha Haight 7/15/2024 11:31 AMI chewed a lot of gum in high school. It gave my brain something to focus on and helped relieve my headaches! Now I bounce my leg to focus instead and take medicine for headaches when I have them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Share My ActionsHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Tasha Haight 7/04/2024 8:39 AMMy published children's books, Mermaid Tasha's Mission & Glitter is Not the Winner, talk about plastic pollution and microplastics. During our swim shows, such as today at Princess Royale Resort, we read these books aloud to hundreds of kids to help them learn the importance of reducing their plastic usage!-
Tasha Haight 7/06/2024 6:50 AMThanks @Robyn, I believe that mermaids are a great way to get people that wouldn't otherwise be interested in conservation to care about the mermaid's home! -
Robyn Jones 7/04/2024 2:11 PMWow, that's cool! 😎
Love the mermaid design ❤️

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Borrowed BooksLibraries have immense benefits for society. What are some cool resources your library has that might not be as well-known as book borrowing? What are some ways you advocate for libraries and share these resources with your community?
