Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Share My Actions
One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 45 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bedroom
Multiple Wears Before Washing
The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.
Bathroom
See the Green
An estimated 50,000lbs (23,000kg) of contact lenses end up in sewage sludge in the US each year. This month, I will learn how to recycle used contact lenses and packaging or switch to wearing glasses instead.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 20 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Kitchen
Is it trash...or a trash bag?
The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 20 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Study
Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 25 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Print in Draft Mode
To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Declutter SustainablyCompared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?
Rachel Hardwick 7/31/2024 9:02 AMIt made me feel more willing to rehome unwanted items instead of just "holding on to it" -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Rachel Hardwick 7/31/2024 9:01 AMI feel like I did more things because the idea of what I "need" to do to be ecofriendly is much more overwhelming. Discovered an easy one on accident... need less condiments in our lives... a lot of waste there over non important goods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use What You HaveBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Rachel Hardwick 7/31/2024 8:59 AMSince we have been without power overnight, I was forced to use up things in our fridge, as I was cleaning out and using things, it made me realize how much we really don't need that we get for one use (sauces mostly) and have several others we could have used instead of getting the additional sauce. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Is it trash...or a trash bag? It's only "single-use" if it's only used once! What are some other creative ways to reuse unavoidable "single-use" items?
Rachel Hardwick 7/30/2024 9:30 AMI use the plastic containers food come in for holding different sets of toys, paints, playdough, etc. Makes keeping my kiddos stuff organized easier. -
Rachel Hardwick 7/29/2024 1:11 PMwith these hot days I have been finding it hard to spend time outside after work, so I have been trying to get out every morning for 20 mins or so with my son to pick our tomatoes, the last of the blackberries, or just sit and eat our breakfast. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Whole Foods MealsShare your favorite whole foods-based meal recipe with us!
Rachel Hardwick 7/29/2024 1:03 PMChicken and zucchini and potatoes roasted with minced garlic and rosemary -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Estimate Your Ecological FootprintWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Rachel Hardwick 7/28/2024 12:04 PMI wasn't surprised by my travel/car consumption. I live very close to work and don't drive to much outside of my daily commute, so I knew that would be pretty good. I was surprised by the food impact; I didn't realize how bad my choices impacted the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Rachel Hardwick 7/21/2024 9:52 AMMy biggest concerns for how we are affecting the planet is for my kids, i worry about how their lives will be impacted by the increase in drastic weather changes and global warming as a whole. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom See the GreenTake a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?
Rachel Hardwick 7/15/2024 10:10 AMI have never used daily because of the waste, but even my 2 week lenses have created a lot of waste. Do we have a Terra Cycle account at the zoo? If so I wonder if we could set up and station in our trailer for the eye drop bottles, cases, and solutions bottles, i didn't realize they have to be recycled though them not the regular recycling, This would be good for our small eye wash bottles we use as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Clean the Dryer VentWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
-
Daytona Begle 7/17/2024 9:34 AMWe keep saying we are every year, but never do! I am determined this month!
