Bathroom

Travel Toiletries

Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.

Multiple Wears Before Washing

The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

Meatless Meals

There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.

Ditch Dryer Sheets

Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.

Enlisting others to pick up litter

I pick up litter in my neighborhood. A couple who lives on the corner of a street that I don't usually pick up on expressed interest in helping. I spent 45 minutes on Tuesday explaining the SC Aquarium's Litter Journal project. I provided data collection sheets and clipboard, a grabber, and a how-to sheet explaining how to sign up for a Litter Journal account. They will collect litter on that street at least once a month, and already frequently pick up litter on the borders of their yard.

Did another solo sweep this morning and picked up 168 items. 57% of everything I picked up was plastics.

The most unexpected piece of trash we picked up was a polka-dotted cloth headband. It had been there for quite some time. The material was torn in several places and the plastic ribbing underneath was showing. So glad to remove another plastic item from the environment. On this particular litter sweep, 67% of what we picked up was plastic.

I took my "restaurant bag" with me to a thai restaurant on Thursday. My restaurant bag is made up of two reusable lidded containers, silverware, and napkins. I consistently take it to eat-in restaurants. I can then bring my leftovers home in one of my reusable containers rather than getting a container from the restaurant.

I picked up 123 pieces of litter today while walking this morning. 41% of what I picked up included plastic.

I recruited two neighbors to start collecting litter and data for the SC Aquarium. I spent 45 minutes with them on Tuesday, explaining the Aquarium's data collection process, provided a clipboard, data collection sheets, a grabber, and a how to sheet on creating a Litter Journal account.

I spent 45 minutes tonight sorting plastics that can be recycled through USC Upstate's TREX recycling program. Will deliver them to the campus tomorrow.

I purchased several paint items from Lowe's today but carried them to my car rather than taking a plastic bag.
