Kelly Dillow 7/11/2024 8:42 AMI switched to laundry soda instead of detergent to eliminate some of the additives and so far I have been happy with it. It isn't great for delicate fibers like silk, FYI. Supposedly it is better for sensitive skin/allergies, so maybe that would be a better swap for you? -
Gillian Lang 7/10/2024 6:59 PMMy husband is sensitive to a lot of laundry detergents, we think it's the ones with enzymes. We are trying the Arm and Hammer laundry
sheets because they didn't have enzymes listed and so far he's doing ok. -
Krystina Jarvis 7/10/2024 2:42 PMPersonally, I've found the laundry detergent sheets aren't as "green" as they're advertised to be. They include the same binding ingredient (PVA) as pods do, and their ingredients tend not to be clearly listed. I've also heard that allergic reactions aren't necessarily uncommon with them :( I've not had great luck with the sheets when I've tried them in the past.

Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.

Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 10 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).

Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 10 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.

Libby Hayes 7/24/2024 12:19 PMI want feedback on reusable air filters for your home. I've heard they can create mold issues and don't know a lot of people who use them. What brands do people use? Will your air unit still operate efficiently or are you making it work harder to use these products?-
Kelly Dillow 7/26/2024 11:40 AMOkay I have the same questions. My daughter has allergies and I switched to a better air filter and also change it more frequently via doctor recommendations (which helped!). I have seen the reusable filters but have been cautious about changing due to the improvement we get from the current process in her allergies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWas this an easy or difficult swap for you to make? Did you have any concerns before making the swap?
Libby Hayes 7/10/2024 2:27 PMI have found this swap to be challenging. I have tried two different products that are packaged in paper and they are the soap 'sheets' like EarthBreeze and I can't remember the others name. I have felt that my clothes don't smell 'clean' and I have to use more sheets than I thought reasonable to have it be economical. Plus, my son actually had what appeared to be a potential allergic reaction to it. Is this common? I think this would be easier with a different job and a smaller household. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Libby Hayes 7/05/2024 9:07 AMThinking that as long as I'm trying, that's something. If we all do an imperfect job, we will still make a huge difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow has learning what happens to returns influenced how you make purchasing decisions?
Libby Hayes 7/04/2024 12:46 PMThat was incredibly disheartening! I don't normally purchase clothing online because I hate that I can't try it on, but I did some purchases this past month while preparing for a trip to Disney where I felt I didn't have the right dresses to wear. I did buy more than I needed as I didn't know what would look good and ended up returning 2 dresses but kept 3. Since I have heard so many people say how easy it is to return, I didn't think anything of it. This will definitely persuade me to keep shopping in store instead of the amazon route. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Libby Hayes 7/04/2024 12:39 PMI try not to be persuaded into fast fashion. With it being July 4th, I think on how I enjoy wearing festive holiday inspired clothing. I do not, however, throw it away afterwards. We are still using holiday hats from previous Independence days as I just store them in my attic for the year. I try to give more value and meaning to the things I purchase and use and never purchase anything with the intention of throwing it away before it is actually broken and un-usable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Libby Hayes 7/04/2024 12:35 PMWith the current heat, I have opted to spend time in my pool compared to going on walks. While in my pool I can just stare out at the horizon and I find this to be very calming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Libby Hayes 7/04/2024 5:56 AMWith going on two different short trips in this month span, I am only packing travel containers with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash instead of purchasing travel size options. This not only helps me reduce waste, but I am getting to use my preferred bathroom products even when away from home.
