Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
Who says we need 5 blades and a ribbon of shaving cream on every $5 razor blade cartridge, when a single blade causes less irritation and costs 92% less? This month, I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Study
Print in Draft Mode
To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.
Family + Pets
Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
I will replace my pet's shampoo with an eco-friendly shampoo bar or refillable shampoo option.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Food
I will prepare my own pet food and/or treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 5 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Bedroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Community
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 2 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 8:04 PMThis year’s challenge was fun—like last year I wanted to see how well I would do with some daily actions that I was already trying to make into habits. Next year I want to CHALLENGE myself to pick up some activities that I’ve never done before. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Recycle My TechBesides reusing materials, what are some other environmental, societal, and economical benefits of recycling our old electronics?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:48 PMOld electronics are usually only considered old by their current owner. If that tech isn't broken, someone (somewhere) could probably use it just as well as if it were brand new. Taking the electronics to a business to get fixed up probably has the potential to double their lifespan for its new owner. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Dive Into Expiration DatesWere you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:29 PMI usually trust my eyes and my nose when it comes to purchasing or discarding food nearing their expiration dates--they're not always accurate! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Ditch Dryer SheetsOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:25 PMPotentially every single-use item can be harmful. If it's only meant to be used once, think about how quickly someone can just discard it on the ground and leave it to rot. When it doesn't break down, the impact on the environment from all of these items piles up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom That Was a Close ShaveWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:21 PMI can make a disposable razor last a lot longer than it should, but the switch to a steel razor has been so effortless! Disposable razors were probably necessary at one point in history (maybe closer to their creation) but now I'm wondering why everyone doesn't have a steel razor.-
Krystina Jarvis 8/01/2024 8:14 AMSame! My favorite plastic-free swap I've ever made is my safety razor and I will talk about it endlessly to anyone who will listen lol

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Sustainable Suds: Pet EditionIn what ways does your pet make your life happier, more interesting, or more rewarding?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:12 PMBath time is more enjoyable for both me and the dog when the bath bubbles I'm using are good for her health and great for the environment. I have a soap-lady that supplies my sustainable dog shampoo. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Buy Only What I NeedAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:09 PMI've noticed that as I run out of certain bath and beauty products, I can actually go without a replacement a lot of the time--some of those purchases were frivolous from the start so once I used it up this month I agreed to "no more". -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Say No to StyrofoamHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:01 PMIn some areas of the city, styrofoam is the most affordable packaging option for businesses in lower-income areas--they might not be able to afford the nicer containers that can withstand being reused or recycled. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Go StrawlessHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 3:58 PMPlastic straws (single use) are OUT and we are better for it. I love to see the new product ideas when businesses decide to roll out reusable cups and straws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Print in Draft ModeWhat are some other ways you can extend the life of your printer ink cartridges?
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 3:32 PMOutside of work I have a small stationery business where I make and sell notepads, cards, and journals at the local farmers markets and craft shows. Ink cartridges are expensive! If I have a document to print that's not super important, I will usually change the color settings to print in grayscale or all together change the print settings to print in a lighter color to save (at least) the black ink!-
Brittany Murphy 7/31/2024 3:57 PMChecking twice and printing once has always helped me! Triple check that its good to print before sending it off to minimize any mistake prints! But black and white is ideal! Higher contrast makes it easier to read!
