I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl.

Of course there is the obvious no one likes to walk the streets or trail with evidence of rotting dog leavings. But at home one can eliminate single use plastics by investing in a special small can just for your dog's scat and pick it up with a scooper or a plain old shovel and dump once a week.

    Community Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

In my summer vacation town there is no glass recycling. My neighbor saves her glass and offered to take mine to a recycle center (65 miles away) every other month. She is a recycle hero!
  • Reflection Question
    Family Provide the Alternatives
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) does your family regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

My family still uses plastic bags. I have bought reusable containers for leftovers and to take on picnics. However sometimes I run out of the right size container and my family says it is so easy just to use a bag. I do rinse out some bags to reuse and the ones I do not want to reuse with food I've used them to pick up my dog's waste on walks away from home. Any other suggestions?

I hear you about your family still using plastic bags, my family still buys bottled water. What you are doing is really great!  We won't be able to have everyone be plastic free or maybe not even be able to convince them to reduce their plastic (I've been trying with my family for years, and they know that not buying bottled water is the choice they should make, they just choose to buy it because it is easy and now part of their routine). My suggestion is to hang in there and keep being a role model !

Maybe my pride of a litter free and dog waste free environment will spread to others in the community.
