Kitchen
Is it trash...or a trash bag?
The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 2 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Fight Local Food Waste
Who says saving money and saving the planet don't go together? Using an app like Too Good To Go or Flashfood, I'll help rescue food from local bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 10 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Community
Share My Actions
One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jessica Herboth 7/31/2024 6:08 AMThis has been a great month of reflection and trying new things! -
Jessica Herboth 7/29/2024 5:57 AMI convinced my mother to purchase reusable bags this weekend instead of using plastic! Small steps make a big difference! -
Jessica Herboth 7/25/2024 11:33 AMPicking up local produce in my reusable bags today to help reduce food waste and plastic waste! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Fight Local Food WasteWhat was your experience like using these kinds of apps? How can you advocate for more businesses to participate?
Jessica Herboth 7/25/2024 8:28 AMUnfortunately Too Good To Go is unavailable in my area, but I purchase through another group that uses local produce- including some grown at local schools to encourage eco-learning for young children. I also always look at 'damaged'/discounted produce at stores like Schnucks first before selecting 'perfect' items!-
Daytona Begle 7/25/2024 9:51 AMI wish we had too good to go! I feel like i would utilize it all the time!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Jessica Herboth 7/25/2024 8:27 AMI try to buy local produce when possible, which means skipping plastic produce bags by using totes instead. I've also used produce-buying services with 'ugly' produce to help reduce waste and the company I purchased through only used biodegradable shipping materials! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Clean the Dryer VentWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
Jessica Herboth 7/25/2024 8:25 AMAs I rent my home, I had to coordinate with my landlord to complete this task. I live in an older home so anything I can do to help conserve energy is beneficial and worth the work!-
Daytona Begle 7/25/2024 9:52 AMMy husband and i have been putting this of for so long! Going to try and do it this weekend!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Jessica Herboth 7/25/2024 5:32 AMI try to keep at least one reusable bag in my car at all times. If I do not have one, I'll typically purchase another at the store as I know I'll use them at some point!-
Jessica Herboth 7/25/2024 5:33 AMSaint Louis Zoo also has mirror hangers to remind you to grab your bags and I intend to get one next time I have the opportunity to!

Jessica Herboth 7/24/2024 8:43 AMMy plastic free July has been going well- adding in reflections to my day is helpful! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Fill a Water BottleInvestigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Jessica Herboth 7/24/2024 8:43 AMBeing an environmental steward means advocating for all and being aware of environmental injustice. By using my privilege to help give others a voice, I can hopefully help improve conditions! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Use What You HaveBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Jessica Herboth 7/24/2024 8:36 AMBy looking at things in a different way, we can find unique ways to repurpose- like decorating or gifting with re-used items!-
Daytona Begle 7/25/2024 7:55 AMI feel like people are becoming more accepting to the fact of receiving a "used" gift! They are more personal too! -
Mackenzie Blevins 7/24/2024 9:54 AMI love the idea of regifting with purpose. Instead of regifting things that I know will get tossed, I can give things that will actually be happily received and get a new life.
