Chris's actions
Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 15 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 15 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 15 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Kitchen
Fight Local Food Waste
Who says saving money and saving the planet don't go together? Using an app like Too Good To Go or Flashfood, I'll help rescue food from local bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Kitchen
Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Proper Clothing CareFast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?
Chris Huffman 7/16/2024 12:44 PMSince starting participating in PFJ, Ive tried to be more conscious of where im purchasing my clothes. I use a site called "good on you" to help find companies that painable manufacturing. This can become pricey though, and may not work for some budgets. If anything, getting clothes at a secondractice sust hand store is a great way to create a more sustainable wardrobe.-
Amanda Reed 7/16/2024 1:21 PMThat is so good to know! I tend to thrift but sometimes I can't find what I need and have to purchase new so it is good to know a more sustainable method!

Julie Mapes 7/10/2024 5:25 PMThat is great! Santa Fe College has a ShareWear Thrift Store that accepts all household donations. They sell most items for $1 to employees and students. Sometimes items are donated with tags still in them! I love checking out the holiday items when the seasons come around.

Chris Huffman 7/08/2024 7:21 PMIt's important to remember that at the end of the month we will all be winners. By taking the proper steps to help reduce waste we are preserving this planets beauty for generations to come. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Balloons BlowHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Chris Huffman 7/07/2024 1:04 PMBalloons may be fun, but the amount of times you see balloons stuck in trees or drifting around town, you know it will case an environment impact. I like the idea of making folded paper balloons. My family does not really celebrate like that, but if the situation arrises I'd be sure to tell them about the effects balloons can have on the planet. Ruin the mood with sad sea turtle videos. -
Chris Huffman 7/06/2024 12:46 PMDay Six, pick up sticks...er, No! Leave those sticks on the ground! They make great habitats for native bugs. Pick up trash instead! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Dive Into Expiration DatesWere you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?
Chris Huffman 7/05/2024 4:04 PMI don't think we should not fear experation dates as much as we do. A basic visual and sniff test can tell you if a product has gone bad. I ate some week old yogurt and did not die, or get sick. I also tackled a can of clam chowder that expired in January. Also, did not loose my guts. Sometimes food does not necessarily need to be tossed before use. -
Chris Huffman 7/04/2024 10:15 AMLet celebrate our independence independent of plastic waste. Wahoo! -
Chris Huffman 7/03/2024 5:04 PMI really dropped the ball on day 3. Sorry planet :(-
