Better Gum

Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. I contacted and searched 7 different local stores/vendors in an attempt to find a solid dishwashing soap bar or a dish soap in a non-plastic container and none of them carried it. I struggled with buying something online because of the impact of shipping on my carbon imprint, but ultimately did purchase something online. I don't love this and would rather support my local economy, so I will be continuing to search for better options available locally.

I too was about to embark on finding a dish soap bar versus what I currently have (which is liquid in a plastic container). I wonder if a local vendor at one of the soundside or downtown markets may have something?

Supporting local small business is so important! But - when the option isn't available, many studies have shown that shopping online actually has a significantly smaller footprint than shopping in-person. So don't feel guilty for making a purchase online! Especially if that purchase was still from a small business.

Why do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?

Research whether mints are made without plastics, and try to find mints that are a) cheaper than plastic-free gum, b) not sold in plastic containers.
