Jen's Actions

Personal Care

Say No to "Flushable Wipes"

Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.

Skip the Straw

I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

1 day left of the challenge, but now the real work begins of keeping up with all the things I accepted as a challenge and continuing to get better at NOT using single use plastics.

I had a delicious hibiscus tea over the weekend, so I decided to make myself a thing of concentrate from loose leaf tea at home and brought it to work with my insulated cup and plastic straw. Starting my week off with a win!

I got a chance to talk to my boys multiple times this week about plastic straws and how they "hurt things". Putting this in terms that they understand and what bad things can happen without scaring them can be difficult at times but worth the effort.

For the potluck today we brought reusable plates and utensils and bought cans of soda instead of plastic 2 liters because the aluminum has a better chance of being recycled than the plastic even if put in the recycling bin.

To follow up on my last 2 posts, this article talks about Myth in marketing of bio-plastics and if they are truly a benefit to the ecosystem or just a marketing ploy to let consumers "feel green" but are essentially the same thing are oil-based plastic.

Are the plant based plastics truly compost-able and actually break  down in a quick time frame?
