Sydney's actions
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Kitchen
Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
Globally, packaging manufacturers make about $25 billion each year on plastic beauty and personal care packaging. That's a whole lot of plastic - nearly all of which ends up in landfills. When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 30 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 30 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Bathroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Take Out Pro
When I'm ordering takeout, I will bring my own containers for the restaurant to fill.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Bedroom
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Family + Pets
Use Cloth Diapers
I will replace single use diapers with reusable cloth diapers.
Family + Pets
Use Reusable Baby Wipes
I will make better choices for the environment and my baby's bum by using reusable baby wipes most or all of the time.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 60 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
When we wash our clothes, the heat and friction causes our clothes to wear down, releasing microfibers into the water stream. To combat and prevent these microfibers as much as possible, in addition to following best laundry practices, I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Community
Share My Actions
One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Family + Pets
Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
I will replace my pet's shampoo with an eco-friendly shampoo bar or refillable shampoo option.
Kitchen
Get Scrappy
Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Take Out ProAre there any restaurants in your area that offer reusable takeout containers? How can you advocate for this practice to become more mainstream in your city?
Sydney Kilgore 7/19/2024 9:49 AMNot that I am aware of. Some places do use paper/cardboard-based items though; however these are meant to be compostable instead of reuseable. This could be advocated for through different organizations, such as Ocean Friendly Establishments. There is a chapter here in the Outer Banks and we do have many businesses that participate. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Save Jars for ReuseWhat's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?
Sydney Kilgore 7/19/2024 9:42 AMTo meal prep or store bulk foods for easy use. Plant Propagation, drinking glasses, clutter organization. We've used them for many things! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Sydney Kilgore 7/19/2024 9:40 AMThis action is one that I am usually inconsistent with since it is so easy to forget bags when shopping. To try to combat this, I keep by reusable bags stored close to our front door and bring them down to the car when I am getting ready to go somewhere. I do have many bags too, so I am not having to remember to do this as often. When I do forget though, I will either leave my items unbagged until I get home or use a purse/backpack if I am carrying one and my items fit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Sydney Kilgore 7/11/2024 10:31 AMWhen clothes are made of natural fibers rather than synthetic fibers, they do not produce plastic microfibers that break off and escape into the environment. If you can find organically produced natural fibers, the better. By looking for organic natural fibers, you are also reducing the amount of harsh chemicals being used to create/treat clothing items during the production process. Reducing the creation of microfibers and the use of harsh chemicals, leads to a cleaner and healthier ecosystem for animals and people. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Sydney Kilgore 7/11/2024 9:57 AMEmbracing imperfection has been a wonderful addition to Plastic Free July. It is really easy to get into your head about not doing things perfectly. I often find the fear of failing, not being good enough, or not doing things perfectly can be the biggest obstacle for a person on any journey. We are all human, and we all slip up every now and then. That is okay. Failures can be some of the best opportunities for learning. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Share My ActionsHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Sydney Kilgore 7/09/2024 7:50 AMI've noticed that folks are more eager to share their own actions once I started to share mine, specifically after the Facebook Live post I did last week for PFJ. This morning, I ran into someone who recognized me from the live and we chatted a bit about PFJ and sustainability journeys. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Get ScrappyHow difficult was this action for you? Is this something you'll be continuing after this challenge ends?
Sydney Kilgore 7/03/2024 8:10 AMI do think the most difficult aspect of this action is creating a plan for the scraps and following through with it. We do luckily have a garden and are composting the food scraps that we can. Our garden and back yard is not conveniently located in relation to our kitchen, so we've had to get creative with having containers in the kitchen and bringing them downstairs to our compost bucket regularly. -
