Harper's actions

Kitchen

Use Reusable Utensils

Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Go For a Walk

Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 12 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Bedroom

Sunshine Bleached

I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use The Dishwasher

Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Keep My Community Clean

In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.

Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Better Highlighters

Instead of buying new plastic highlighters, I will simply use colored pencils instead for all of my highlighting needs.

DAILY ACTIONS

Family + Pets

Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal

I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.

DAILY ACTIONS

Bedroom

Multiple Wears Before Washing

The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Fill a Water Bottle

Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

You could pick up litter in a group with your friends or family or with an organization.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Sunshine Bleached
The simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?

    Harper King's avatar
    Harper King 7/31/2024 6:13 PM
Also if you are hanging your laundry outside, you can enjoy spending time outside.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Better Highlighters
What did you think of this action? Is this something you think you can turn into a long-term habit to avoid plastic highlighters?

    Harper King's avatar
    Harper King 7/31/2024 6:01 PM
Yes, I dont normally use highlighters anyways, but this is a new way for me to annotate books for school.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Use The Dishwasher
Although the dishwasher saves time and water, some people enjoy washing dishes by hand for the mindfulness practice it can provide. What are some other ways you can practice mindfulness in the kitchen?

If your kitchen has windows, you can put house plants and that would be a good mindful hobby. Cooking is also a good hobby.

    Harper King 7/31/2024 5:46 PM
Spending time outside and being active always boosts my mood. Playing sports outside is fun and can make me more productive afterwards.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Multiple Wears Before Washing
In addition to helping clothes last longer, washing clothes less frequently also saves water by running the washing machine less often. As the climate and water situations change, what are some other ways both your household and our community could become more resilient?

    Harper King's avatar
    Harper King 7/31/2024 5:37 PM
I always wash my clothes with cold water on a short setting so less water is used. Being mindful of the type of detergent you use also helps, water based detergent is to be avoided, while dry detergents like powders and sheets are better to use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Fill a Water Bottle
Investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

I believe protesting is a great way to raise awareness to others and the corporation. If enough people protest, the corporation will start to make change to their system. Petitions also help.
