I know I’m late to the bread baking but my friend gave me a sourdough starter and I’m so excited! I named it St. Yeasterbasket (but Breadpool and Bready White are amazing options). Great job this month everyone! I dare you to keep up your actions 😉

How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?

Thinking about plastic pollution problems creatively allows for change on multiple levels!
Interesting listen on how disposable culture started/was taught to society to make the new norm: https://www.npr.org/transcripts/757539617
Today I signed this petition: https://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org/letter-of-support-plastic-pollution-act

Didn’t have time to get to the butcher, so I was lazy and had to get chicken- avoided styrofoam but got the frozen chicken in a bag that I should be able to clean and recycle or reuse for freezer storage

Something I find very useful are silicone stretchy lids that can be used to wrap something or stretch over a bowl/container I can’t find a lid to

Clearly a lot of my attention is on food 😉 but that’s where a majority of plastic consumption starts! I made deviled eggs and you can see plastic purchased mustards, and glass alternatives! Not sure if there is yellow mustard in glass (but you can probably make your own- there are recipes for everything)! I LOVE the “Old style” whole mustard or horseradish mustard so I’m not really missing the “classic.”

Today’s new recipe: chocolate banana ice cream! (It’s hot I needed to cool off)
    • 4 frozen overripe bananas
    • 1/4 cup almond butter
    • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
    • 2 tbsp chocolate protein powder
    • 1/8 tsp salt
    • optional 1/4 tsp instant coffee; mini chocolate chips
blended and froze in silicone cups to make them bite sized treats!

I love that this recipe calls for 'overripe' bananas. I am some what picky about how ripe I like my bananas but I HATE wasting food, so when they are 'overripe' in my opinion I chunk them up and freeze them to give to our dog. Lucky, she doesn't mind my rejects :)

Such a big part of plastic free food prep is THE PREP! Seriously, take some time to think about what your week looks like, take note if you have everything or need to substitute any items. But also plan on easy meals on the ready. I like overnight oats with fruit bc I make 3 ahead of time as grab n go breakfasts thru the work week.

Not only do I love my metal straw that I use for my iced coffee, but I find when wearing a mask 9 hrs a day I’m more likely to drink water from my container if it has a straw! Very important to stay hydrated especially in this heat!

My biggest plastic crutch is cheese. Do you have a sticking point with any of your purchases?

I struggle with produce bags! I know that I am going to wash the produce once its home anyhow but all stores have produce bags stationed everywhere so I find that I take them. I re-use and try to remember to recycle the bags I do take but its 100% unnecessary for me to take them in the first place.
