Proper Clothing Care

All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 15 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

DAILY ACTIONS

Family + Pets

DIY Cat Litter

I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Is it trash...or a trash bag?

The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Other species can teach us important lessons about ourselves and life in general. What has your cat taught you?

Patience. I owned dogs for most my life, and now that I have a cat I am having to adapt training to accommodate a bull-headed little guy living with me.

Cats are great! Mine have taught me that you can both want to strangle them and cuddle them for their shenanigans. Patience is definitely needed haha
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Proper Clothing Care
Fast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?

This is so tough, because often the clothes that last the longest are more expensive to represent the investment. I try to buy one piece here or there that will last a long time, and focus efforts on mending or thrifting other clothing options.

How has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?

I understand I can't always avoid single use plastic, but have made a concerted effort to avoid plastic bags when shopping. If the amount I have is small enough, I carry it myself. If I expect a bigger trip, I make an effort to remember my reusable bags.

    Kitchen Use What You Have
Besides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?

Instead of purchasing a new pitcher, I went to a thrift shop to purchase a second hand pitcher for a BBQ.

Kitchen Is it trash...or a trash bag?
It's only "single-use" if it's only used once! What are some other creative ways to reuse unavoidable "single-use" items?

I started by replacing my coffee filter (which contained plastic and was single use) to a reusable filter. This eliminated both waste and single use plastics from entering the waste stream.
