Penny's actions

Community

Keep My Community Clean

In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 25 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Whole Foods Meals

Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 2 whole foods-based meals at home each day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Go For a Walk

Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 60 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Is it trash...or a trash bag?

The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Get Scrappy

Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Kitchen

Meatless Meals

There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 2 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Tuesdays are turtle patrol mornings. In the beach before dawn with my litter bag. Today there was a false crawl and baby turtle tracks who emerged in the dark.

I engage in my own clean up effort at least 4 days per week on the beach at the isle of Palms. On Tuesdays, we pick up litter in addition to turtle patrol.

That’s awesome, Penny! I hope you log what you find in the Litter Journal. If not and you’d like to learn how, I’m happy to help! IOP uses that data for decision-making, so your efforts will definitely make a difference!

I was in Vermont visiting my so and family. Due to hurricane Beryl, the coop farms to which they belong was in dire need of harvesting due to the river rising. About 100 people came to help harvest potatoes before the fields flooded. It was an incredible community effort!!

I’m currently in Vermont and participated in a community effort to save as many vegetables as possible from flooding at several community farms. Harvested potatoes, carrots and beans.
