Claire's actions
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 1 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 4 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Mend and RepairTime to brag! Show us a photo of what you repaired and tell us about the experience!
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/31/2024 12:39 PMBought a blazer on clearance last year - turns out it had a tiny cut in the sleeve. I thought about donating it, I stitched it up instead. Wearing it today. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Learn about Environmental JusticeWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/28/2024 7:09 AMI was deeply embedded in reviewing a climate change statement for an organization. It's hard to be hopeful somedays - but I see a lot of positive work coming out of passionate organizations.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/28/2024 7:02 AMI cleaned out my garden at home this weekend. The amount of trash that had been trapped by my plants was staggering. I wish people were more conscientious about their trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/28/2024 6:59 AMThis is my hardest one. When possible, I don't take a bag at all - but I constantly forget my reusable ones. I wish Kroger had a program where you could request your online ordered groceries in reusable bags or boxes that you returned the following week.-
Amanda Zaino 7/28/2024 7:10 AMI sometimes end up carrying everything and/or using my purse to fill as much as I can just to save a bag or two!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Go StrawlessHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/28/2024 6:58 AMI see more paper straws available - still opportunity to improve. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Declutter SustainablyCompared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/25/2024 6:37 AMThis is a tricky one. From what I've read, a lot of places that accept donations are routinely overwhelmed with things that people want out of their houses but aren't necessarily in good enough condition to resell. I've been trying to sort through what does have a second life vs what needs to be recycled in other ways - like a textile recycler. -
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/24/2024 10:25 AMI realized how few plastic bags I use or have the chance to decline because I order so much online. Which isn't a great thing eco-wise, either. I have switched to doing grouped deliveries to decrease some of the online ordering delivery impact - but there's more I could be doing...-
Krystina Jarvis 7/24/2024 3:51 PMFun fact: shopping online is actually more sustainable than in-person - even if you were to take public transit! I loveee reading studies on this and every one I've read points to the same conclusion. So don't feel guilty about shopping for what you need online - as long as the convenience of it isn't causing you to purchase and consume items you wouldn't normally buy that you don't actually need! -
Rose Bemo 7/24/2024 1:31 PMI'm also guilty of depending on Amazon deliveries, so I've made a new commitment to do that less. With more in-person shopping, not only will we lesson plastic waste, but also reduce the carbon impact of delivery vehicles. But truly, I doooooooooooo love Amazon.😁

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Research Local Waste SitesIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/21/2024 4:52 PMI went online thinking it was going to be easy to find the landfill my waste goes to - not so much. An internet search didn't produce more than my trash goes to a 'private landfill' after being processed at SOCRRA. A search of active landfills in Michigan shows we have 41 landfills - only California has more than any other state. Oakland County has six - of which four are open and available. Wayne County has 22, of which about half are open. I have some questions, as there are duplicate addresses listed. All of the landfills are private. The largest, but tons of waste, is in Washtenaw County. https://www.epa.gov/lmop/project-and-landfill-data-state -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use The DishwasherAlthough the dishwasher saves time and water, some people enjoy washing dishes by hand for the mindfulness practice it can provide. What are some other ways you can practice mindfulness in the kitchen?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/06/2024 12:55 PMAfter three months of hand-washing all our dishes, I installed a new dishwasher today. (It coincided with a July 4 sale on appliances, not the challenge, but the timing is good. :))-
Alaina George 7/09/2024 6:34 AMI also took advantage of the July 4th appliance deals for a more sustainable oven. I hope you're loving your new dishwasher!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Fill a Water BottleInvestigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Claire Lannoye-Hall 7/04/2024 6:45 AMA colleague/friend gave me an amazing water bottle this year - filling it brings my joy and hydration. :)
