Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Community
Share upcycling project
Are you the kind of person who makes something useful out of junk? Something you can use in your garden to attract wildlife? We would LOVE to know! Please share a picture and instructions for those who want to try it. Spoiler alert...we might use some of these ideas in our Investigate lab to share with the public.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 20 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 20 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Kitchen
Get Scrappy
Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 20 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 5 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bathroom
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 20 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.

Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 20 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/30/2024 6:28 PMI can't believe this Plastic Free July challenge is almost over! It didn't even feel like a chore or an obligation, just a way of life. I noticed that each action became part of my routine, which is exactly how we can make changes in our lives, and those changes surely will have a positively impact on our environment and community. Each and every team member contributed in their own special way, and I'm so grateful to be part of this PFJ journey. Thank you all, and have a fantastic plastic-free summer! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Homemade or Refillable CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/13/2024 1:25 PMSo I've made 2 products based on recipes found on this website https://pollybarks.com/blog/zero-waste-cleaning/ to make dishwasher soap and simple fabric cleaner for carpets. The thing is, I didn't even have to get out of my house, since I had all the ingredients, so that's a double safe (gas + product and additional plastic bottle). I still have to test it, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. What struck me was the simplicity and the additional "feel good" sentiment that came along with make my own cleaning products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/11/2024 3:52 PMSometimes I feel guilty about forgetting to bring my own grocery bag or bringing chocolates that are individually wrapped, but at the end of the day, I realize that I'm acknowledging these facts and working toward avoiding using these SUPs. A solution I came up with was to have a bag in my trunk filled with foldable reusable bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Proper Clothing CareFast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/08/2024 6:26 PMFor starters, I'm not into fashion and only wear clothes I feel comfortable in. This year I did go through my wardrobe and donated the clothes that no longer fit. On top of that, I don't go out buying new clothes very often, and when I do, I look for things I can match and are affordable. I love checking out second-hand stores, but when I do, I have a tendency to get things I don't necessarily need, so now I only go shopping if I absolutely need something. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Estimate Your Ecological FootprintWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/04/2024 7:34 AMI forgot to consider that community and commodities are also an important factor in calculating one's ecological footprint. We try to do whatever we can to lower that footprint but some factors are simply out of our control. However, not doing anything is even worse, so we keep on doing what we can and try to inspire others in the process. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use a Reusable MugDid you encounter any resistance from your local coffee shop when trying to use your own mug? How did you navigate it, and how can you advocate from this to be a more commonplace practice in your community?
Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/02/2024 6:29 PMWell...I'm a cheapo and brew my own cup of coffee the old-fashioned way, so no plastic, no need to refuse anything, just an honest cup of joe in my favorite mug I got from my kids...a perfect way to start my day. -
Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/01/2024 3:02 PMI started my walk around the pond and was pleasantly surprised that I couldn't find any trash to pick up...until I reached a fishing spot. Lids of worm containers, wrappers, cigarette buds, glass bottles, and other trash went straight into my trash bag. I might just consider adopting that trail I love to walk and pick up what others left behind. -
Nancy Locquet Absillis 7/01/2024 8:31 AMOh boy...that has been a while since I cleaned the dryer vent thoroughly and was surprised about the build-up...I've been using dryer balls, and have installed a few dryer racks to avoid using the dryer. Little steps...
