Jenna's actions
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 4 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 6 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Is it trash...or a trash bag?
The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bathroom
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 15 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bathroom
A Sustainable Flow
Pads and tampons are typically made with plastics, and about 41 million pounds of menstrual products end up in landfills every year. This month, I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
When we wash our clothes, the heat and friction causes our clothes to wear down, releasing microfibers into the water stream. To combat and prevent these microfibers as much as possible, in addition to following best laundry practices, I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Bedroom
Multiple Wears Before Washing
The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Clean the Dryer VentWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
Jenna Lyons 7/31/2024 12:59 PMWe haven't ever in our current house. Based on the amount, I imagine the previous tenant didn't ever either. It was not hard at all! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Eco DeodorantDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Jenna Lyons 7/31/2024 12:59 PMDefinitely irritated skin! I have pretty sensitive skin and would have random times of discomfort. I imagine this could have been the cause! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Jenna Lyons 7/31/2024 12:55 PMMostly just personal joy, the best part of my day is checking my garden and seeing what new veggies are growing, or deciding what to make for dinner that night based on what is ripe! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Jenna Lyons 7/31/2024 12:50 PMRemoving the pressure from myself to not make an error has allowed me to be more creative with re-using unavoidable plastic -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Jenna Lyons 7/27/2024 11:55 AMThe biggest benefit would probably be the clothing's ability to break down in a landfill over time. There are square miles of clothing sitting like pyramids in the desert because no one knows what to do with all the waste. Plastic clothing will always be that - plastic. Natural clothing will become part of the natural cycle of biological materials. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Rubber Glove Pet Hair RemovalWe know you want to - tell us about why your pet is so awesome!
Jenna Lyons 7/25/2024 8:13 AMShe's a silly little gremlin that matches my energy, forces me to think outside of the box for regular things I otherwise wouldn't have to with out her, and gives me kisses every time I come home, even if her breath is stinky. Also, she helps guard my tomatoes from the neighborhood squirrels!-
Alyssa Miller 7/26/2024 2:00 PMSO CUTE! -
Brittany Murphy 7/25/2024 8:44 AMLove my little silly pookie girl! Shes old but so full of energy, and such a good girl! She definitely sheds a lot so the rubber glove stick and regular brushing keeps her coat so smooth! -
Christine Kitch 7/25/2024 8:38 AMBeautiful pup! And a defender of tomatoes too! Doesn’t get better than that.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Proper Clothing CareFast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?
Jenna Lyons 7/25/2024 7:59 AMIf I see something that I really would like to buy, I often earmark it for later. If I come back a month or so later, and I still feel the same about it, I'll purchase it. Most of the time, I don't feel as excited about it and opt not to buy it.-
Christine Kitch 7/25/2024 8:42 AMThis is a great strategy against fast fashion traps. Thanks for the idea. -
Anna Huang 7/25/2024 8:36 AMI do the same! It really helps cut down on impulse purchases by a lot.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Jenna Lyons 7/25/2024 7:57 AMI buy most of my clothes second hand from places like Poshmark, Mercari, and other consignment and thrift stores. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Is it trash...or a trash bag? It's only "single-use" if it's only used once! What are some other creative ways to reuse unavoidable "single-use" items?
Jenna Lyons 7/09/2024 1:25 PMTake out containers can often be washed and re-used a few times. They are also good for storing fragile things, like christmas ornaments!-
Robyn Jones 7/09/2024 1:34 PMAlso true with butter and cookie-tin containers 🙂

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Save Jars for ReuseWhat's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?
Jenna Lyons 7/09/2024 11:29 AMShells from the beach, flour, bulk laundry detergent, pistachios, home made pickles. If I can put it in a jar, it is likely already in a jar :)
