I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.

If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.

Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

I will spend at least 10 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.

Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Plastic History BuffHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Ciara Martin 7/31/2023 7:52 AMFinding out that we've produces 8.3 billion metric tons of single-use plastic in just 73 years is alarming. What would have been entirely understandable in applications such as the medical field, I think the current state of our culture promotes the desire for instant gratification and ease, rather than higher quality items meant to last. "Out of sight, out of mind" is a huge proponent of the plastic-waste issue. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Follow the Chasing ArrowsRecycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?
Ciara Martin 7/31/2023 7:48 AMI think having open conversations is very important. I have the opportunity as a social media manager to spread educational messaging like this, which I think would be a good idea to work into the monthly schedule. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Ciara Martin 7/31/2023 7:47 AMI learned that the highest and most common waste is bags I use to dispose cat litter every day. This prompted me to purchase bio-degradable waste bags made from vegetable byproducts, instead of the "odor control" plastic bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Ciara Martin 7/31/2023 7:46 AMI'm really excited to teach my nephew about how plants grow and where his food comes from! We planted herbs, pineapple, and tomatoes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Research Local Waste SitesIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Ciara Martin 7/31/2023 7:46 AMI learned that there are two waste collection sites within a 5 mile radius of my apartment, and a landfill about 10 miles away. I thought it was odd to see where the waste collection sites are, as they are in highly populated areas. I always assumed these sites would be located a little ways out of town, to help with the health of the community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Learn about Environmental JusticeWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Ciara Martin 7/31/2023 7:43 AMWe learned that environmental justice is the action to make healthy living available to all, regardless of location, income, or ethnicity. Learning about how laws and nation-wide government action is the way it is currently being handled made me want to pay more attention to legislation. Before starting here, I hadn't paid much thought to what happens in the government, but the more I learn the more I see how its important for everyone to get involved in supporting environmentally-friendly laws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Say No to StyrofoamHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Ciara Martin 7/31/2023 7:38 AMStyrofoam is a commonly used food storage container, that many restaurants offer to hep keep costs down. It would make sense that attempts to reduce the use of such a cost-effective tool would bring up difficulties for small businesses. While sustainability is ideal for the planet, with the current inflation and rising costs, often times the sustainable options are not financially feasible. -
Ciara Martin 7/26/2023 2:23 PMWe're in the home stretch! How are you feeling about this month's Plastic Free Ecochallenge? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Give Some Green GratitudeIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Ciara Martin 7/19/2023 1:22 PMI'm biased to answer this, as a Social Media Manager. For my college public speaking class I actually gave a persuasive speech on why following The Florida Aquarium's social media was a valuable action towards sustainability, since the first step to a sustainable future is education and gaining knowledge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Clean Plate ClubHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Ciara Martin 7/19/2023 1:21 PMThis was an easy swap because I found the Grove brand at target that offers concentrates for refilling their products, which I've been slowly switching over to.
