Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 10 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Study
Print in Draft Mode
To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.
Bathroom
Plastic Free TP
Most toilet paper is wrapped in plastic #4, or low-density polyethylene - a thin plastic film that cannot be recycled back into more plastic film. To avoid this plastic wrapping, I will purchase toilet paper wrapped in paper instead, or use a reusable toilet paper option.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Kitchen
Better Gum
Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Kitchen
Take Out Pro
When I'm ordering takeout, I will bring my own containers for the restaurant to fill.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 10 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 2 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sara McDonald 7/20/2024 3:12 PMAny ideas of what to do with styrofoam packing peanuts? We ordered some cool vintage glasses and they arrived in packing peanuts - ugh! I didn’t think people even used those anymore! How can I best dispose of them?-
Sara McDonald 7/21/2024 6:50 AMUnfortunately, I'm certain they are the old school peanuts. I've received items packed in the water soluble ones, which are quite different in shape and texture. These are actual styrofoam. I'm not aware of a local Buy Nothing group but will look into it. I could also try Nextdoor to see if anyone needs them for moving. Thanks for the advice! -
Krystina Jarvis 7/21/2024 6:34 AMAre you sure they're actually Styrofoam? I also didn't think people used those anymore lol But I do see the water-soluble ones used often! If you're not sure, try running one under the faucet and see if it dissolves. If it does, they're basically corn puffs!
And, whether they're actually Styrofoam or not, do you have a Buy Nothing Group in your area? You might be able to gift them to someone who's moving or a small business owner who can reuse them. -
Sara McDonald 7/21/2024 5:06 AMThanks for the tip! Unfortunately, we don’t have any large planters 🙂↕️. I also tried donating them to the UPS store and a storage place but neither would take them. -
Rose Bemo 7/20/2024 4:24 PMI’ve seen people use this type of material to add bulk to a large planter. It saves on potting soil and provides pockets of air to allow drainage. 🤷🏻♀️

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Dive Into Expiration DatesWere you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?
Sara McDonald 7/19/2024 12:36 PMBest by, sell by and use by dates are meaningless - dates are put on the food by manufacturers. Did you know that milk that spoils is not dangerous? It just tastes bad but it won't make you sick. Who knew?-
Linda Rowe 7/19/2024 4:25 PMInteresting! Thanks for sharing.

Sara McDonald 7/16/2024 9:10 AMI just came back from Louisiana (New Orleans and Baton Rouge). Styrofoam plates and cups and plastic straws were everywhere. Kudos to Charleston (City and County), Folly, Mount Pleasant for their bans! The difference between here and elsewhere is noticeable. -
