I ordered sustainable bed sheets from Sheets and Giggles. They’re made from eucalyptus and feel so smooth and super cool at night. They even come in all cardboard packaging.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    Colleen McKeon's avatar
    Colleen McKeon 7/31/2021 9:22 AM
Volunteering can help make your area a more beautiful place to live. It can help you meet neighbors and learn more about your community and what’s going on.

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

It helps spread the message to more than just the people I see and/or talk to weekly. I can reach distant family members and larger audiences and help direct them in the right direction if needed.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Join a Cleanup Effort
How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

It feels great to get together with people who have the same passion about the environment as you and help make our earth a little cleaner.
  • Reflection Question
Community Raise Money For a Nonprofit
What are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?

    Colleen McKeon's avatar

Many organizations are taking the first step and getting rid of plastic bags and instead offering reusable or paper bags. You can shop local and raise awareness to businesses that still offer many plastic items.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Colleen McKeon's avatar
    Colleen McKeon 7/21/2021 5:36 PM
The waste sites in my area are located in  an area that has a lot of industrial properties. The neighborhoods in that region are not the most upkept and is probably due to being a mainly industrial area.

    Lifestyle Watch a Documentary
Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

    Colleen McKeon's avatar
    Colleen McKeon 7/14/2021 12:04 PM
I watched “A Plastic Ocean” and learned how many island communities suffer from extreme plastic pollution. Many countries are slowly realizing what a problem plastic is and banning its manufacturing all while trying to clean up its mess.
  • Reflection Question
Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Colleen McKeon's avatar
    Colleen McKeon 7/14/2021 9:59 AM
My plastic consumption is lower than the average American and just below the average European but I can still do better. Cooking and groceries is my highest category. Even though I try to buy fresh ingredients, many of them are prepackaged in plastic and it’s hard to get around those.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Start Composting
Do an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?

    Colleen McKeon's avatar
    Colleen McKeon 7/14/2021 9:49 AM
We have a lot of veggie scraps that go to waste. The benefit for me would be having nutrient rich compost to fertilize my plants.

I love my natural and plastic free laundry detergent. It ships to me carbon neutral, is cruelty free, and is packed in cardboard to recycle or compost.
