Jen's actions
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 5 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 10 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Family + Pets
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 10 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Community
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 40 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 6 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jen Mclachlan 7/24/2024 7:40 PMA great thing happened today at the Zoo. Ivan, scheduled a lunch and learn with our vendor that provides can liners. I am excited to hear about a new liner Ivan is advocating for to help us reduce plastics but also ensures strength in our can liners. Way to go Zoo team. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenMaking veggie broth from scraps doesn't just reduce waste, it can also save you a ton of money! What are some of the ways you use veggie broth in your kitchen?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Jen Mclachlan 7/16/2024 6:22 PMI have one reusable bag that i put in my car door side pocket and in my trunk. I try really hard to return the bags to my trunk after they are used. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWhat's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?
Jen Mclachlan 7/10/2024 10:56 AMThis something I am doing very frequently and moved from reusing the glass pasta sauce jars for food. In replace of prepackaged jars, I am making my own pasta sauce from aluminum that can be recycled infinitely. -
Jen Mclachlan 7/10/2024 10:53 AMI joined the challenge as it helps the earth, people in general but sustainable practices can help long term with saving money. This year I have recycled most of my glass jars from jams to use as a food container at work. Long term it saves money and helps the planet. -
Jen Mclachlan 7/07/2024 6:56 PMOrdered foam soap for my soap dispenser. Less waste and save money in the long run. I am trying the brand Blueland. -
