Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Community
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bathroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 1 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Better Gum
Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDid you encounter any resistance from your local coffee shop when trying to use your own mug? How did you navigate it, and how can you advocate from this to be a more commonplace practice in your community?
Kyle Meibers 7/25/2024 6:12 AMI'll be honest so far I have not tried it at my local shop. But, I will see this weekend possibly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Kyle Meibers 7/24/2024 1:46 PMGoing walks allows me to clear my head and it also helps me feel like I am staying fit and reaching my goals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Kyle Meibers 7/24/2024 1:45 PMI understand that I cannot change everything, but I can do what I can. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Kyle Meibers 7/02/2024 5:42 AMAny plastics that still have BPA can lead to long term issues as they degrade over time -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomThere are many benefits to using a bidet, including health, environmental, and economic benefits. Which of these benefits was most influential for you in making the switch to a bidet, and what has your experience been like since?
Kyle Meibers 7/02/2024 5:37 AMSaving money on having to by Toilet Paper was definitely a factor for me lol -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenInvestigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?
Kyle Meibers 7/01/2024 1:56 PMI would say the first step is to create awareness. Making the matter known is the first step in moving towards change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Kyle Meibers 7/01/2024 1:55 PMI think this is very hard since a lot of fast-food restaurants still use them out of cost or convenience. I will say some places are switching over. I would say just trying not to use them or refuse is a start. -
Kyle Meibers 7/01/2024 7:15 AMWoo day 1, we all got this! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Kyle Meibers 7/01/2024 7:14 AMYes, you see a lot more places using paper straws or biodegradable straws.-
Jennifer Klotz 7/01/2024 7:39 AMSadly, this isn't my experience. I still get many plastic straws with my drinks (primarily just water!) and they come automatically, not upon request. It's frustrating!
