Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Kitchen
Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 10 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Kitchen
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 5 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Alyssa Miller 7/30/2024 6:23 AMAnother Plastic Free July is in the books! Good work again this year, Maryland Zoo! :) -
Alyssa Miller 7/26/2024 1:56 PMMy favorite action item is the one about going outside. Which is sooo easy working at a Zoo! Spent some time outside today and it wasn't blistering hot out either, so that was great! Picked up a couple of pieces of trash while I was out too. Knocking out action items left and right!-
Alyssa Tyree 7/26/2024 3:05 PMThe perks of working at facilities like ours is how easy it is to find a reason to be outside 😁

Alyssa Miller 7/26/2024 1:55 PMLess than a week left!! Lets keep it up!! -
Alyssa Miller 7/25/2024 7:29 AMI have learned that practicing sustainability in daily life was a lot easier when I didn't have a baby. Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of ways to practice sustainability with a child, but it does feel like it takes a lot more thought, time, and effort than before. It feels like practically everything for babies is plastic, disposable, etc, mostly for convenience, and it's also easy to get caught up in the things we think we "need" for our kids.-
Christine Kitch 7/25/2024 8:25 PMThe best way for me to continue sustainable choices during infant-baby-toddler time was to thrift/consign as much as possible.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Eco DeodorantDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Alyssa Miller 7/25/2024 7:15 AMNo, but my husband definitely does! His skin will literally peel off under his arms. We have both switched to more clean/eco friendly deodorant options, and to be honest, I think they work better for the smell, too! -
Alyssa Miller 7/19/2024 6:16 AMAlready thinking about my plans to spend alllll weekend outside, and a trip to the farmers market to get local produce. Can't wait!! -
Alyssa Miller 7/19/2024 6:15 AMThe heat wave finally broke, and I was able to spend several hours outside yesterday!! FELT SO GOOD!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Numbers EverywhereWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Alyssa Miller 7/17/2024 9:49 AMLearning about the types of plastic made me realize how much stuff is actually plastic! Like, I KNOW it's plastic but I FORGET it's allllll plastic. Such as kids toys, CDs, accessories, electronics, etc. I feel like certain plastics are obvious and easier to avoid, but this kind of made me realize how hard it can be to live a truly "plastic free" lifestyle.
