Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 20 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Bathroom
See the Green
An estimated 50,000lbs (23,000kg) of contact lenses end up in sewage sludge in the US each year. This month, I will learn how to recycle used contact lenses and packaging or switch to wearing glasses instead.
Bathroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Even when advertised as "flushable" these wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but instead combine with fat to create massive clogs. This month, I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
rick miyajima 7/10/2024 2:39 PMAvoid corporations that are known to use underpaid labor or with inhumane working conditions. Look for clothes at thrift stores, or vintage stores. Many clothing items from the past were made with more care or superior products because corporations were more interested in their quality rather than the impossible expectation of increasing profits every quarter. Corporations and their shareholders sacrifice human dignity, welfare and environmental concerns to add to the un-spendable wealth of the ultra-rich. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
rick miyajima 7/08/2024 1:34 PMThe Japanese have a phrase called wabi-sabi that seeks to embrace imperfections and find beauty in things that are incomplete or ephemeral. I don't mind buying or utilizing pre-used items and think its history adds character. Buying used or donated items also makes sure my dollars don't go to big corporations, which do exponentially more damage to the environment than all the participants in Plastic Free July combined. Smash capitalism.-
Luz Rooney 7/08/2024 2:40 PMKeeping plastic out of the bathroom is tough. I must confess I have not replaced my toothpaste or shampoo habits. Any clues for options that work?

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWhat's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?
rick miyajima 7/08/2024 1:26 PMI make cold brew every night before bed in the summer and put it a mason jar in the fridge overnight. I avoid getting drive-thru coffee from big corporations because I want to save money, avoid plastic and smash capitalism.-
Luz Rooney 7/08/2024 2:49 PMI have reused jelly preserve jars to hold water when panting with children after a talk about pollinators. It gently addresses the adults to reuse at home too.
