Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Plastic-Free Produce Storage
Produce doesn't need to be stored in plastic bags to stay fresh! I will learn how to properly store my produce to extend its freshness without single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Get Scrappy
Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.
Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Kitchen
Choose Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase unpackaged produce at the grocery store or at the farmer's market.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bathroom
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
Globally, packaging manufacturers make about $25 billion each year on plastic beauty and personal care packaging. That's a whole lot of plastic - nearly all of which ends up in landfills. When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
DIY Cat Litter
I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Sherri Molde 7/23/2024 1:22 PMI prefer bar soap over liquid, always have. It's easier to refill my travel size containers than to try and go to the store and purchase more or to reorder them. Once I've returned from a trip I immediately refill containers so that the next trip everything is ready to go. I don't see changing habit changing. I also take care of refills for my husband. If I didn't he would just go out and buy whatever he needed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Numbers EverywhereWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Sherri Molde 7/19/2024 6:06 AMI used to have this poster in my classroom to help my students understand what plastics could be recycled easier than others. Most recy ling companies will only accept certain plastics while others accept them all. It was always an eye opener for the kids at the time and a great visual to help remember options when making purchases at the store. The most surprising plastic that is harder or can't be recycled is the vinyl material that detergent containers are made of. After learning about the difficulties with those containers is the reason I switched my detergent to a more earth friendly packaging like Earth Breeze. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Give Veggie Scraps Another LifeMaking veggie broth from scraps doesn't just reduce waste, it can also save you a ton of money! What are some of the ways you use veggie broth in your kitchen?
Sherri Molde 7/17/2024 2:17 PMI've started using veggie broth in place of chicken broth in some of my dishes. For example, asparagus risotto tastes so much better with vegetable broth than with chicken broth which is what it calls for. The house smells so good when making the broth. I really enjoy making it on a cloudy and some times stormy day. You can also add it to mashed potatoes. I add sour cream, milk and butter with a splash or two of the vegetable broth; yum! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Sherri Molde 7/17/2024 2:09 PMI'm very aware of my routines and what I purchase. I think I do a decent job when it's just me. However when the family is involved then I struggle with choices they make and do my best to show an alternative option. The problem is they don't see the need to make these small changes and it drives me crazy. I do what I can to change small things here and there that I can control. Decisions have to be made to purchase something that costs a little more and is more earth friendly versus something that is cheaper and not earth friendly. It's a give and take at the moment. Not willing to get rid of my 2010 Crossover for something that is newer and electric but willing to be mindful of certain items that I purchase. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Get ScrappyHow difficult was this action for you? Is this something you'll be continuing after this challenge ends?
Sherri Molde 7/15/2024 5:05 PMThis is something that I have to be very mindful about. It is so easy to just throw stuff in the trash and be done with it. We've now started making frozen meals with the leftovers and have used those frozen meals as a quick something when no one is wanting to cook!-
Sherri Molde 7/15/2024 5:54 PMWe provide meals for my husband's mother every couple of weeks (we take turns with his brothers). On the weeks that i 's someone else's turn to take meals I've started saving the leftovers (those that will freeze well) to take to her when it's our week to provide meals. We have learned to cut back on how much food we cook now -
Jordyn Lewis 7/15/2024 5:48 PMI love leftovers! I hate having to waste food, and it saves time on meal prep for the next day!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets DIY Cat LitterOther species can teach us important lessons about ourselves and life in general. What has your cat taught you?
Sherri Molde 7/05/2024 7:53 PMI have a very needy little girl. She does not like change and is not happy about switching out her litter. She is very reluctant in using her box and has been very vocal about her displeasure. I will give it another week to see if she will stop being so reluctant. What has she taught me....she has a very strong and determined mindset on what she will and will not tolerate.-
Mary Hanks 7/05/2024 10:01 PMThank you for being sensitive to your girl's needs and preferences. I learned the hard way that when cats' routines and desires aren't respected, the cats can experience so much anxiety that it makes them ill. A neighbor asked me to take his cat because she wasn't dealing well with the new dog in the household, and when I went to get the cat, she was practically bald below the waist from overgrooming. The vet actually had to put her on phenobarbital for a while.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Choose Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Sherri Molde 7/01/2024 2:32 PMIt's just another way for the manufacturer to charge the business for these bags by making us think we need them to keep what we are purchasing safe.
